While everyone, including me, was going through their awkward and angst-y early teenage years, I was focused on setting up my future. Within my first week of 7th grade, my religion teacher introduced a yearlong project to us. Going to a school that revolved around service naturally meant the project had to do with that. On October 2nd, I did a presentation/prayer service on breast cancer awareness. I had everyone, if they wished to participate, sign a pink ribbon poster and I would donate a dollar for every signature to my aunt’s breast cancer organization. I had no idea that this silly little project would change my life so much. Before I knew it, several other people found out and my idea, eventually, made way to some pretty important people at school and I found myself being asked if I could spearhead this as a charity fundraiser for the whole school. I wanted it to be even bigger than the year before. After coming off of a strong year of success, I certainly did not want to lose it. Over the summer, I founded a branch of my aunt’s breast cancer organization and made it especially for children. I was the energizing bunny, going full force. I ran another school wide fundraiser. After spending every lunch period I had for a month making pink ribbon pins, dividing them by homeroom and delivering them, I was ready to present to the school what we were going to do. After just one day, we raised over 600 dollars (which, not to brag, was the highest student run fundraiser outcome ever in my grade school) I couldn’t have been prouder.
