I was getting ready to go to the mall with my parents and cousin. When my Mom entered my room and told me to get changed to my Taekwondo's clothes because we weren’t going to the mall anymore. I asked her “but why” she answered “because your master called us and told us that you needed to go to a tournament”, I got nervous because I had never been to a tournament before and they seemed to be hard . When I was done changing my Parents , My Cousin and me got into the car, my parents got in too , then my father started driving us to the location of the tournament. When we got to the tournament my Parents and my cousin Maria went to sit down on the seats.I went to get ready and trained until my belt color or name was called so I could go compete

A big game at the Blake hockey arena had me drenched in sweat. The Junior Varsity game had just finished the second period, which indicated I had about 45 minutes until the Varsity went on for warmups. Walking into the locker room from my usual pre-game routine, I sat down next to my hockey bad rearranging everything in the specific order I would put it on. I felt the urge to have a bite of my Cliff bar, but only a little bit because I do not like playing on a full stomach. I took my retainer off and had about half of the Cliff bar.…

Polished Brief Have you ever wanted something so bad that you thought it was necessary for your life to go on, for me that something was a pet dog. At the age of seven I was begging my parents to get me a puppy for about a year, the conversations usually sounded like this “ Hey mom and dad I was wondering if I could get a puppy this year for my birthday?” and they would reply “ I don’t know son a dog is a huge responsibility, I don’t know if you are ready for this yet.” then I would storm off all angry, because I did not get the answer I was looking or hoping for.…

I went to an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting, held Wednesday at the 12 Step Club, located inside the Yard Birds mall, in Chehalis Washington. I had gone down the day earlier in the week to make sure I knew all the logistics, where, when and how long it would take, whether or not it was an open meeting, and so forth. The room was in a shopping complex the size of a small mall (305,00 square feet to be exact), and the room itself looks like it had retained the furniture and paint from when it was originally constructed forty-five years ago. Frankly it looked cold, old and moldy, with bleak, dirty, concrete block walls. The gentleman I talked to had long pony-tailed grey hair down his back, of an age impossible to determine, was washing dishes…

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an individual child with a desire to gain one Snickers bar, must be prepared to trade no less than three Twix bars. In my household, every bag of fun sized confections was an opportunity for a ridiculous negotiation with a not so ridiculous lesson behind it. When my father loves Snickers just as much as I do, why should he take only one inferior Twix for one Snickers? Critically assessing how much my companion stands to lose versus how much I was willing to pay to get what I want is a skill I have been developing since middle school. Negotiation and debate, human interaction of all kinds have always piqued my interests both academically and recreationally.…

Every test was finished and they started calling names for the fellow students and friends who had endured the training and the test with me. I was the first one up and waited for everyone else to get up. I noticed my father who was filming me and all of the other spectators who had wandered in to watch the spectacle. I was instructed to take off my current belt, a red belt with a black horizontal stripe that went around the whole belt. One of my favorite instructors and mentors awarded me with the belt.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…

When sitting down to plan out how I was going to execute my final project for this course, I came to a realization that I do not personally feel that I have a bias against groups of people because of their race, gender, religion or anything along those lines. I have a bias against a group of people due to their actions. I am Francessca Vitale and I have a bias against alcoholics. I have this bias because my grandfather was an alcoholic and because of that I was unable to form a relationship with him. Not only was my grandfather an alcoholic, but my two best friends since childhood have began to devote their lives to alcohol.…

How Did I Get Here? As a child, the youngest of nine, I was always a nurturer. I was afraid of animals, so I loved On babies and my mother. This weekend I got my tonsils out, it was not a pleasant experience at all. Friday morning was the time of the procedure and I was convinced that everything was going to go perfect, I would feel comfortable and recover in no time at all. The only reason I would not be at school, was because I simply don’t want to be there, not that I am in so much pain that it hurts to talk and it doesn’t seem to get better. The waiting room at surgeons was offly small with only ten chairs.…

My coach David came over to mom and said, "I think Jared is doing great in practice and I think it would be a great experience for Jared to go to Washington D.C for a fencing tournament called the Capital Clash. " I heard great things about the Capital Clash from older fencing friends. They said it was in a big fancy hotel called the Gaylord Hotel with a connected convention center.…

Everyone has their fair share of drinking stories and they all vary from funny, sad, or stupid. My first time drinking with friends is a good mix of all three. We can blame it all we want on being young and stupid but looking back I think of it as a good time and an opportunity to learn a lesson. Almost everyone there dealt with the repercussions of our actions and somewhat regret what we did. Deciding to drink after our junior homecoming led to us getting suspended from sports for a week, two months of counselor meetings, and a bad reputation for a while if not the rest of high school.…
