Personal Narrative: Geek Squad

Journal Entry 4 In my previous job at Geek Squad, I had a co-worker that I worked extremely well with. He was with the company a lot longer than I was and eventually became my boss. During his tenure, they allowed him to choose an assistant manager and because of how well we worked together, he believed that I was the best option for this position. We accomplished many goals, including an award for being one of the top 10 Geek Squad departments in all of Best Buy. One thing that we both agreed on and made it a department goal was complete and total transparency throughout the department. It usually goes well when a very clear instruction is given to each person. I like to have the event well planned, detailing what each person will be doing, with whom and what is expected of them. I give a copy to each person or group and usually give a time schedule so they will achieve the desired outcome as per the plan. Occasionally things have gone wrong and it can be attributed to those who fail to follow the clear instructions. I always ask now for everyone to read the paperwork and plan and to ask questions if there is anything which they don't understand.…

While most kids were outside playing in the mud and dirt, I was sitting inside on a couch, comfortable, clean, and happy to do so. As a child, I detested the idea of getting my clothes dirty. I loved to be able to maintain the pristine cleanliness of my outfit, so I often refused to play outside. Instead, I resorted to a crimson red Gameboy SP with a blazing LED screen, almost too big for my hands, for my childhood action. I’d live out intense fantasies in that three inch square.…

I established a 15 hour technology fast from Saturday 10 PM to 1 PM Sunday morning. I selfishly chose this time frame because I knew that any other time during the week would be nearly impossible to accomplish. Since, I am indebted to my technological devices to complete assignment, manage my schedule, and meet required responsibilities. In addition, I chose to include sleeping hours because it would cut a majority of the time that I would be without technology. However, I did not want to fully exclude myself from this social experiment, therefore, I extended the hours.…

In this fable concerning communication, a wise old walrus attempts to lead his herd through the demanding everyday issues they encounter regularly. Food supplies are dwindling, the beaches are receding, another herd enters their territory, and members of the community are leaving the herd. In other words we had clear goals in mind, so when it came to communicating with each other it was clear. Also within my team, we all exchanged information to help each other and it can argued that we achieved our goal by clear understanding, clear dialogue as well as a clear agenda but mainly due to the fact that we worked collectively and had strong cohesion within the team. This is further supported by research by Wu & Xiao 2011; Peterson 2012) who claim that in order to be successful, members need to employ open dialogue and have clear agendas. Reflecting upon this, it can be argued that this supported us to achieve our goals and present successfully. Also being able to reflect will not only allow me to improve myself but also embrace these disciplines in the future in order to enhance my performance.…

By allowing and encouraging parents to drop by during the day unannounced, we can build trust and opportunities to have the families involved with our program. We need to use communication, allow the families to volunteer and serve as advocates for the children and let them serve on our board. Lastly, we can share valuable information with our families about their children, the program itself and the resources that we have available for them.
