Garage Workshop
I've done it countless times. I walk up the driveway of my dad’s generic suburban ranch house and open the fading, white garage door. The lights on either side of the door mirror each other and are always shining. Once the door finishes its loud opening sequence, I stare at the rusty decklid and tail lights of my Mustang.
Off to the right of the car is a wall filled with shelves. The shelves are filled with miscellaneous items such as, christmas decorations, basketballs, and motor oil. The homemade wooden shelves stretch from front to back and ceiling to floor. The nose of the car points to my favorite wall. The seven foot, black, heavy duty Husky tool box sits off to the far left of that wall blocking the door to the back

The east wall, which is right of the car, has the solid brown door that leads into the foyer. To the left of the door are more wooden shelves but these hold strictly sprays for cars. For example starter fluid, cloth seat cleaner, Seafoam engine cleaner and a blue bottle of Windex to clean windows. The stone gray workbench to the right of the brown door matches the concrete floor. The workstation is always cluttered with parts for what we are currently working on. Tools and spare parts are scattered across the smooth table top. Under the mess is an old radio from the 80’s my dad used to use. My dad always tunes it to 94.7 WCSX which is a classic rock station. The radio is rarely turned off. The red heavy duty vice is also bolted to the workbench and comes in handy frequently. The old white fridge is cramped between the wall and the workbench along the same wall. The fridges only purpose for us is keeping drinks cold. On top of the fridge is a two foot tall speaker from the 80’s that spreads the classic rock throughout the garage. In the middle of the garage our current project, a 1987 Mustang GT convertible. The painters tape on the floor marks where the brand new white letter tires lineup so we

Pacing back and forth, I pondered how our volleyball fundraiser was going to stay afloat. The council was distraught, unable to acquire more teams, with the tournament in two days. With our advisors and the vice principal leaning towards canceling the event, my council had two choices: get eight more teams to sign up or call off the event. I didn’t want to cancel because I knew that as Junior and Senior year approached, we needed more money to fund our proms and class trips.…

I chose to create a floor plan of Melinda’s bedroom because she was the main character, and I felt that the setting was an important part of the book. Although the author of Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson, didn’t give readers a complete description of what Melinda’s bedroom looked like, I made some mental pictures of what I thought her bedroom and some of the decorations looked like. Melinda was described as a very creative girl who was very artistic. Her best grade on her report card was in art class, and it also seemed to be her favorite class.…

“I call it the cut-and-paste apartment,” Walter Youngblood, an artist and ice-cream man, said of the fourth-floor walk-up in East Harlem where he’s lived for 20 years. He bartered a painting for the stove and rescued the bashed-in mini-chandelier from the trash. It hangs in the kitchen, which has colonized half the living room. The refrigerator stands in a far corner, and steel wire shelves jut out, with dangling pots, pans and heavy-duty sieves at the ready.…

Take the car to industrial ruins As the home of the auto, Detroit boasts many auto plants that are both architecturally significant as well as historically important. The Picquette Avenue Plant, Ford's inaugural large factory, is a tattered testament to a growing company. The more extensive - and dangerous - Packard Plant, two and a half miles away on Concord Avenue, is one of the largest auto plants in history, and is now the victim of frequent demolition crews. These large-scale industrial buildings are sometimes off-limits, but not always. Construction dust, withered wallpaper and empty door frames don't keep curious neighbors and unceremonious squatters away.…

The memory of 126 Riverside Drive will always stay with me. The concrete in front of the apartment overlooking the park is separated into squares and covered in old gum and the occasional chalk doodle. You go up and stand on the single black concrete step and look up at the black marble and the silver 126. You walk in the clear glass door and walk onto the faded tile floor that goes from the bottom of the few lonely stairs through the next door and to the elevator. You feel the cold from the faded brass handrail and walk up the stairs to the buzzer with a list of all the apartments.…

Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument.
