Personal Narrative: Gaining Musical Theatre

Decent Essays
I have always had a love of the arts, but it wasn't until I was a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz that I knew I wanted to be an actor. Up until that point, I had just wanted to sing, but being up on that stage made me want to do musicals for the rest of my life. But what really made me want to pursue musical theatre was that it has been the only way for me to truly express my emotions. When I was younger, I was made fun of as a little kid. So when I was in the Sound of Music, I was surrounded by a company that loved me, and I loved them. They were like my second family, which made me realize that this is the type of work environment I would want to work in. A place where people really do love each other and love what they're doing. The event that I decided to go was BYU Baroque Ensemble, a production made by BYU students, taking place at Madsen Recital Hall Harris Fine Arts Center on November 3. The idea of making a baroque orchestra is where musician get together to make a perfect composition of music, the baroque orchestra is made up mostly of stringed instruments, when you listen you feel something different that makes you see it from another perspective, you just can’t stop listening and focus on every note that the musicians are playing. The type of instruments that were utilized in conjunction were the basso continuo, played by a viol, cello or bassoon. Other parts were added between the melody and the bass by a keyboard instrument, usually a harpsichord or organ and the development of tonal harmony, in which the melodic voices movement remains under the functional chord progression.…

To be a leader, one must first earn the trust and respect of one’s peers and become someone that they would listen to. As a petite, easily distracted female, I often have trouble becoming a person that others listen to outside of the classroom. Thus, becoming this leader and being elected and inducted as the president of the York Suburban Trojan Theatre Club is my most impressive achievement in leadership. At first, people did not know who I was, so I was able to build a reputation for myself by becoming the props crew lead in all but official title. Still, when backstage, I have a reputation as a leader.…

Growing up, I was always a hard worker. At age nine I sold enough newspaper subscriptions to win a bicycle in my hometown of Allegheny, Pennsylvania. It was also at that age, that I was fortunate enough for my family to travel to New York for my career. At age thirteen, I was a chorus girl and later on when I was fifteen, I performed at Pan- American exposition in the “Trip to the Moon” exhibit. At age sixteen, I had an opportunity to perform in Mr. Bluebird along with my mother at the Iroquois theater.…

What started off as a mere history assignment, became an attestation to the well-known phrase ‘anything is possible through strong belief’. My voice echoed throughout the streets of Manhattan, as my close friend and I sight-saw in the heart of the city. Wrapped with such vivid lights on each corner, we truly cherished our time scarfing down tall burgers and crispy fries at our favorite dining restaurant. While new memories were being made, we came across a site greatly familiar to us. Located between Broadway and 8th Avenue, uprightly standing was the Richard Rodgers Theater.…

Personally, I think my constant strive to be better at what I love to do says a lot about me and shows my determination. My parents have always said the talent will only get you so far and that hard work and dedication is what will get you all the way. Being a part of theater for about 5 years now has also taught me a lot about empathy and working as a team. Learning how to embody and live as someone else for just a little while has made me a more empathetic person outside of the theater and made me more understanding to those who live differently than I do or have different beliefs and values. Rehearsing and performing with the same group of people for 4 weeks to even a few months can bring people quite close.…

Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument. Getting my first instrument was exciting, yet challenging at the same time. When I told my mom that I wanted to start playing music, I didn’t realize how hard it can truly be. I didn’t think of how much patience and time I would need to put into my practicing.…

Over the past term and a bit, I feel in general that I have achieved what I was aiming for in concern with creating a halloween container/basket. Starting this assessment with a lot of drawing and sketching and jumbled ideas and designs, I thought that I would be a hard task filled with challenges and difficulties. However it turned out to be the complete opposite. Choosing my final design, which has now been modified and changed, I started the real work. Even though I started this design with little knowledge on clay, I was excited and enthusiastic to learn.…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. Thoughts and ideas flooded my mind as I stepped into the off-green colored cafeteria.…
