Personal Narrative: Futurity

Futurity I was shocked for a moment after I watched the show Futurity because I didn’t expect it as a musical show. My classmates who sat next me were also confused. In order to understand what the show is about, I found a brief summary from their website: “Two people try to imagine their way out of impossible circumstances in FUTURITY – an avant-Americana musical by indie band The Lisps. Julian is a Civil War soldier dreaming of a technological utopia. Ada is a mathematical genius thousands of miles away. Together, they’re going to invent a machine to end one of the darkest periods in our history. An electrifying concert-story featuring an army of thirteen musicians.” One of the reasons I was confused is because as an international student …show more content…
There was a big shelf that you can climb on it, which symbolized a rail road in Virginia. They performance with that pretty good. After remove the shelf, there was a big machine behind of it composed of many metal things. Such as bike, wheel gears, band was there as well. I may consider that piece of art as the “machine” that Julian Munro and Ada Lovelace tried to create. The machine brings peace. There are two points I didn’t get it. Before the intermission, one of the soldier suddenly got shot on the rail road, and then drop his instrument. That’s how it end up first part, which was very confusing. Another part is after the intermission, every soldier put their instruments down and take off their hats, walking to the big giant machine. Is that means they dead? Julia was the last soldier took off his hat and got shot. There was actually blood on the back paper. That made really well with his excellent …show more content…
Soldiers have to kill people even though they don’t want to, and even though they may dead at the end. Their body is not their body, but they have a hope for a peace of the world one day. It is hard for me to understand the most part of the music. However, I can’t deny that the music they sang pretty well. The band was in the front most of the time. Then the soldiers moved it back with the performance. So I think it was pretty smooth to remove the band in front of the audience. It didn’t need to turn off the lights and let audience wait for couple minutes to prepare for a new scene. Instead, they singing as a group, and meanwhile pushing and pulling the band stage down to the side. That time, I didn’t know the performance stage was bigger than I think that there was a bigger machine with the piano and drums on that. They shifted everything very natural and very carefully that make you believe this is the part of the show. They don’t need to hide anything from the

On Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 8:00 pm, I have attended a performance by Joy Harjo and her friends Mitch Taylor who played the guitar, Dave Copenhaver who played the bass guitar, and Smiling’ Vic Gutierrez who played the drums and vocals. I had specifically chose this performance to do my report on because I wanted to feel what actual Native American music would be like in concert as opposed to what we naturally think of when it comes to Native American music. For me, that would include heavy drumming and dancing, which are usually even-pulsed with a variety of vocables. Not to my disappointment, the music was unique in its own way and had spoke directly to me.…

It is UWC that witnesses my transition: not only have I come to appreciate the diverse world, but I have also honed a more sophisticated self-cognition. Numerous late night discussions such as China-Tibet conflict gradually equipped me with cosmopolitan lens and faded my national identity. Moreover, UWC shaped me into an idealist and pragmatist. The utopian mission ignites my aspiration to pursue a peaceful and sustainable future for human beings.…

Its sort of ironic that both are singing about very similar things and have the same stance on it, but do not agree on anything else. The importance of these songs is to prove just that. In response to the German song, Victor Laszlo has the band play “La Marseillaise” to try to overpower the Germans. The shot of Victor with the band is the opposite of the secluded German positioning.…

At eight in the evening on Friday, November 4th, a band called The Neighbourhood performed at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas. Opening for them were the bands Manchester Orchestra and Chappo. Being a major longtime fan of both The Neighbourhood and Manchester Orchestra, I felt incredibly lucky to have family living near Dallas who were willing to provide a place to stay for myself and my husband to attend the concert and see a new city. The entire performance was impressive, extremely hyped, and emotional, all the way from the audience all the way to up on stage. While I knew of the first two bands mentioned, I knew nothing of Chappo and it was cool to hear something new live and in person.…

Through the combination of this documentary, “The Great White Way” and “Showtime, I was exposed to information that made me question my definition of a musical. I was also forced to explore how the musical developed from its origins into what we know as the modern musical of today. My first discovery was that the musical is a distinctly “Americanized” art form and as such it is became a key part of American cultural movements that would follow the Revolutionary war. After gaining our independence as a country we moved to reject a great deal of our European culture and were then forced to create a new distinct American culture with its own art forms and practices. In order to determine how this process occurred specifically within live performance…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

During my ongoing business conference to Colorado to learn about future career opportunities for my dual degrees in Communication design and Computer Science, I got to attend an orchestra concert presented by the Hapless Heroes who were conducted by Leslie Stewart. The show was musical theatre where they had a live orchestra playing in front of the stage while the actors explained the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. I attended this amazing show on the 4th of December. I love learning about Greek Mythology so I was already enthusiastic about attending this show.…

The setting for this piece is Japan after a tsunami triggered a nuclear accident at Fukushima Daiichi which caused the eruption of protests. These large scale protests included the use of loudspeakers, drums and chanting (Novak 2013:0:32). Along with these public protests, musical performances were also used for the anti-nuclear protests. Another popular method of protest involves a loudspeaker mounted to a moving car and protesters following along singing and chanting. The podcast also discusses a performance in which the song, I’ll Look Up as I Walk plays (Novak 2013:6:49).…
