Personal Narrative: From Cavities To Concealed Teeth

Improved Essays
All through my life I have had several problems with my mouth from cavities to crooked teeth. I had braces place on January, 9 of 2015 and I unlike other people have always enjoyed going to the dentist. I remember in elementary school when the they would drive the children with no insurance to free clinics offered in universities and I loved it more than anything. I looked forward to getting free tooth paste, a new tooth brush and fun goodies that they offered at the dentist. It was like a field trip for me, what else could I ask for. Growing up my teeth began to move and erupt in places that made my mouth hurt and some began to cut my tongue when I spoke, I was scared to smile and often spoke quickly so that others could not see my teeth.

The Crevasse “Adversity is the source of our deepest growth and greatest blessings; embrace it, dare to seek It,” that was a quote from Aron Ralston, who fell down a crevasse and his arm was wedged under a rock, which inspired the movie “127 Hours.” One day I was going to the creek with my friends, Matthew and Kendal, to hang out. We had this amazing spot that had a bridge that we made and everything. We were bringing further supplies to add on to the spot and make it look more visually appealing. When we arrived at the park we brought all of the supplies down under a bridge.…

“Tuck and roll” that’s what they say when jumping off or out of a moving vehicle but that didn’t work for me. I was about five years old, I was visiting my grandparents that I hadn’t seen in a while. I was riding with my dad on a four wheeler and I was having fun until I felt the four wheeler jump, and then I turned around to see my dad jumping off. That was when I got scared. I tried to drive it, but with my family, chasing and yelling for me to jump off it was hard to do.…

The joy and content I felt that day was unexplainable, I felt like I was already in Dental school and all the hard work had paid off. Coming from a minority and low-income family, it was a great accomplishment for me to receive something that I was looking forward to for so long, it gave me a glimpse of why I should continue on this journey of one day becoming a Dentist. That was an experience that I will never forget, and is something that I know will motivate others because there are so many students who come from low income families or are from a minority group who lack the confidence to know that they are able to accomplish great…

When brainstorming for my valediction I had many ideas such as a overly cheesy thank you, a super salty rant or even to just fill it with star wars quotes. But inspiration came to me before prom when I went to Dylan's candy bar and got a ginormous Jawbreaker. Over the last few days, I have been mindlessly licking and sucking on this Jawbreaker. Sometimes when you throw yourself at something over and over again things might go wrong. For example after battling this jawbreaker the last few days my mouth is bleeding and covered in scabs.…

The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me.
