Personal Narrative: Frank Cody High School

Improved Essays
On a warm sunny Wednesday I found myself walking towards the old but enormous Frank Cody High School. I recently failed classes and never received the credits. So I came undecided on my future from this point on. The thought gave me a stomach pain, sure enough I wasn’t hungry I just had eaten before the ride. Sure enough I was nervous. A tall man stood before me, he introduced himself as Robert Donohughe. He was the MCH counselor. He laid out reality to me about my credits, which I kind of already knew. As he explained what was expected of me to receive the missing credits that strong stomach pain came back once again, except I felt sick this time. I was normally up for new things but this wasn’t one of those things. When the words “Summer …show more content…
I was a typical teenager new to high school at the time. So I didn’t take school seriously at the time. Who knew my actions from 9th grade would have such a strong impact on my future? I had a choice to make. Would I attend sweaty Summer School or party with my best friends? I believed if I attended Summer School others would think I wasn’t a hard worker, I didn’t want to be embarrassed. I value my appearance far as how others see me, my knowledge and most importantly me. I value myself to much to be seen not as smart as everyone else and to fulfill being the stereotype of a young black girl. I’ve always wanted to be different, be wise and intelligent like my mom raised me. She and my step-dad support my every decision. One day my biology teacher approached me smiling, he said “Taya your grades have improved dramatically!”. My face expression was priceless! I was excited, since I never actually passed either semester of biology. By 11th grade I had all the credits I was missing, by making the best decision ever. When I first started extended day I didn’t want to be labeled as average. I came to the conclusion that it was extended day that made me who I was, it was the effort I put

It was a normal Tuesday at good ol’ Freeburg Community High School. Our rambunctious lunch group sat around the table to enjoy the lunch of the day, chili. Now you see, I had brought my lunch, but I wasn’t allowing that stop me from enjoying a steaming bowl of chili. My bowl of chili warmed my hands, heart, stomach, my esophagus when it was occasionally too hot, and eventually my lap. Between all of the jokes and laughter I hadn’t noticed that my hands were shaking a tad more than normal; if I had noticed, I would have done the smart thing and set my bowl down rather than hold it.…

I always got good grades, but I never felt like I earned good grades. Although I was making straight As and Bs, it was always relatively easy to earn those marks in middle school.…

She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…
