Personal Narrative: Fracking

It wouldn’t be too long until I could get out of bed and wake my parents, my four-year old self thought. I was always the first one up at the crack of dawn, but I ended up getting yelled at if I awoke their somber sleep. Once my stomach started growling and gurgling, I decide that it’s time to stampede my mom and dad’s room. The bright sun singed my eyes as it entered through all of the opened windows of my home. Was mom and dad awake already? If they were awake I would have sensed the familiar aroma of eggs and bacon. This time it was much more peculiar, a scent that was foul and abusive towards my nostrils. The daily game of manhunt was over because I was the last hider. Since then, I was a little adventurer that was not afraid to get dirty. Little did I know, that I would branch out and become an eco-warrior. These natural places, were meant for humans to enjoy, not for them to destroy by littering and polluting the area. Activities such as cleaning up beaches and recycling were good deeds that I enjoyed. I could write a whole novel about how fracking hurts the human ways of life. “You get different rules because you’re a girl!” Some annoying adult told me a few months ago while joining a game of basketball. With the orange ball in my hand I retorted, “My gender does not assess the way I can throw a ball into a basket!” I propelled the ball into the basket before he could, and stood there with my arms crossed. The people gathered around had their jaws dropped in awe. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an adult’s face get red that quickly. As well as an eco-warrior, I try to fight patriarchy and sexism throughout our society. Feminism is a concept that women are people and not objects to talk down upon. When I get out of high school, my hope is that I can find a career in advocating for women’s
