Personal Narrative-For The Love Of The Game

For The Love of the Game Have you ever wanted something in your life so much that it hurts? The simple thought of it sends butterflies through all through your stomach? I’m sure you have, everyone has this feeling once in their lifetime. Whether it was over a girl you knew in high school or something much simpler as your favorite pizza. For me it was bringing home that state championship trophy. My little league all-star teamed was feared all through Davenport. Everyone knew that Northwest Little League was the most star-studded team in the Quad City area. Winning baseball games had became a tradition for my team. We were like the New York Yankees of Davenport Little Leagues. Everyone hated us, wanted to be us, but no one could ever beat us. So it was no …show more content…
The previous year my team had made it through districts and eventually were crowned runner-up in state in a heartbreaking loss. This year we only had one goal, become state championships. After winning districts there is a two week period prior to the state tournament. In those two weeks my teammates and I were busy little baseball bees. I recall having 7 a.m practices, getting a break, and then having to be back at the diamond by 5 for another practice. I hated those 7 a.m practices. In the middle of July there never seemed to be a cloud in the sky to shield myself from the vicious heat of the sun. I can still taste the sweat as it rolled down my face and crept up on my lips. We weren’t allowed to wear sleeveless shirts so I had a farmer’s tan that would make any redneck proud. I also dwell upon having to play first base where the dirt was so hot that would feel as if my cleats were melting to my feet. Our field had taken so much punishment from our two-a-day practices that any minute the baseball could take a bad hop and “eat up” an infielder. However, all of the hard work, pain, sweat, and suffering paid off in the end, we were in the state championship game for a second year in a

Honestly, I’ll come right out and admit that I have never been the Detroit Lion’s number one fan, or any football fan for that matter. Sure, I had technically gone to each of the homecoming games both years in high school, but only for the sole excuse of being able to put some red war paint on my face and attempt to catch up with some friends. The only exposure I had to the sport was walking through the doors of Phase Three during cross country season. Day after day, I was forced to push through groups of teenage guys reeking with a putrid stench of dried sweat, rotting eggs, and grass stains; the smell in itself was enough to make my eyes water.…

I flew around the field and made plays, while backing it up in the batters box with my bat. My performance was sufficient enough to be extended an invite to the Area Code Games! I was ecstatic when I received my invite and celebrated with my family, and throughout the excitement, I knew my work wasn't done. I can remember arriving to the field to meet my team in Long Beach and seeing Palm trees in the outfield and a Fresh-off-the-press New Balance bag with all of my assigned gear in it. I knew then that my work had payed off and that experiencing that failure in the summer of 2015 was the fuel I used to get here.…

I knew that I was better than what the coach thought of me, so that embarrassment changed into something new. It turned into motivation. Every night after practice I would hit extra in the batting cage and even in the morning before school. The drive that I had to succeed was incredible, and I never settled for anything less than what I knew I could do.…

There were quite of few memorable experiences I got to participate in this baseball season. I got to play in three different state tournaments. Our first state tournament (High School Season) we got first, the second one (Legion) we got eighth, and the third one (Teeners) we got third. My favorite one was High School state because we had a really good first game and won in 13 innings which was exciting.…

I played sophomore baseball for Senior over the summer. It was the best season I've ever had as a Dubuque Senior High School baseball player. I was the pitcher on the team, also known as the "Ace". Before the last couple of games we had an anonymous team vote on which award people should get. At the end of the season we had a potluck with the varsity team and the sophomore team.…

I loved baseball growing up and I found myself on multiple teams at a time. One of the Leagues I happened to be in was the Lafayette Little League. My brother and I played here for many years and umpired as well. When I was 12 years old, I was put on the Little League all-star team. Unlike the years before on the team, this year was special because we had an opportunity, which was very slim, to go the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.…

My first two years on the team were quick because of the dass of 2013 which was a dass made of eight players that got majority of the playing time. It was the following year, my third year, that caused the upset. This is the year we lost that starting lineup of eight seniors. They had started for as long as most of us had been on the team. So,when it came practice time, no one knew what to do without them thereleading stretchinglines, or being the first ones up for infield.…

I felt a part of the team. I was a part of a new family. It taught me how to get to know people and how to forge relationships with them. If there was one thing I was used to by now, it was that whenever something didn’t go well for me on the baseball field, the future holds green pastures only if I go looking for it. So sure enough, after that loss, I set my eyes ahead to the next season. That final season we had a great start, winning a lot of games, but we ended up barely making the playoff as somewhat of an underdog. We didn’t think about anything that was at stake, we simply played our game all the way to the championship game without a loss in the playoffs. We won the first game of he series and were winning for the majority of the second game.…
