Personal Narrative: For-Sales

One essential part of humanity is helping one another. It promotes bonding, togetherness, and love. I have read times and times again in the US and other part of the world, where people stood to help other fellow citizens who have been victims of terrorist attacks, natural disasters, brutality etc. Besides the fact the recipient of a kind gesture feels a sense of gratitude and appreciation, there is a sense of fulfilment on the part of the one who renders the help. This is exactly how I feel as I relive this experience. Sometime in 2014, I was going to sell my car so I get could get another one. I placed a “for-sale “sticker on the car and drove it around Houston. I had multiple offers from prospective buyers, who offered a little less than the asking price of $2500, but I refused all, thinking I would get something better. However, that wish never became a reality because a woman called one day to offer something very small. She explained how badly she needed a car for the whole family. Apparently, she had been saving towards purchasing a small car and as at …show more content…
What that means is that even if somebody calls the next day to offer exactly $2500 or a little less, I won’t be able to take it. Her situation was pathetic: if it was going to take her two months to raise $200, then that family must be really struggling. After much thoughts and deliberations, I decided to sell the car to the woman. I removed the for-sale sticker to prevent getting further calls from buyers and waited for her until she was ready. The expression of joy on her face knew no bound the day she came to pick up the car. But the reality is, I was even more joyful that I could it for her. I sacrificed the car and my mobility for some time until I could also save enough to get another car. Although moving around wasn’t that easy afterwards, but each time I remember the experience, I feel fulfilled and encouraged to do it all over again, and even

The All My Life for Sale project by John Freyer was an interesting concept to sell the best items on eBay that represented his life in Iowa City, Iowa. John D. Freyer the creator of the project “All my life for sale” was able to paint a picture with his words. The picture painted in the reader’s mind is negative at times and positive at others. Freyer’s emotions show through his words, I can picture a passionately opinionated man in my head when I read through his advertisement named “Five Dollar Iron”. The “Five Dollar Iron” advertisement seems to be targeting story teller type reader. Freyer is not trying to sell the Iron itself with the “Five Dollar Iron” advertisement; he is trying to sell the story behind the five dollar Iron which is designed to target a specific niche of readers.…

In a world where CEOs of corporations get paid 20 times larger annual compensations, taxes are ever increasing, and the people demand what they want when they want, it is hardly a utopian society. The wealthy are indeed continuing to live a "privileged" lifestyle. The poorer citizens are not oppressed by the government, but by the situation that the government refuses to remedy. Thomas Paine wrote in his book, The Rights of Man, his beliefs that the United States could be an orderly society; taxes could be few and the government would be fair to its citizens. However, his belief has not held up in recent years.…

Researching the idea behind Mr. Meyer’s project helped me understand his project and why his items were appealing. Fred Meyer used his descriptions to tell a story for every item that he was selling on the internet. It was apparent that his goal was to attract buyers who wanted to be a part of his journey and his experience, not just a purchase. Why else would anyone purchase an open box of taco shells from a random person? His project seemed less about making money and more about inviting others into his world.…

There is, after all, more than a single person in world, and so long as that remains true, it is our duty to help one other. We are to feel compassion towards our neighbor and be a good Samaritan (Luke 10). It is our conscientious duty to help one another when the need is there. It always has been, is and will be that way until we leave this beautiful planet behind as a species. This provides the best outcome for the most amount of people.…

Growing up, my family and I always did volunteer work, which got me into the habit of helping others. When I was in 6th grade, my mom got involved with an organization that brought refugees from the Middle East to the United States for medical treatment. My mother and step dad offered to foster a girl from Iraq, Zahra, whose family passed away from a car bomb, and to pay for the medical treatment she needed. Her father, brother, mother, and grandmother were all in the car, once her father turned the car on the front of the car exploded. Her internal organs needed reconstruction due to shrapnel and her brother lost his arm.…

Beginning at the tender age of four, my family and I united over the joy of what many would consider unlikely--yard selling. Every Saturday we would pile into the car at 7:00AM and travel the city, looking for the classic cluttered set-up on the side of the street. My parents handed my brother and I five dollars each, saying that we could get double back if we invested properly. The strange mystery did not reveal itself until we began negotiating at our local flea market to sell the random knick-knacks that had attracted our young eyes.…

With Predictably Irrational, Dan Ariely contributes to the growing list of books (Blink, Nudge, Freakonomics, Thinking, Fast and Slow) meant to challenge preconceptions of human rationality. Ariely’s book first begged the question about Israel’s proclivity for producing behavioral economists. Recognizing an insufficient sample size to justify that generalization and loath to assume more research in my waning days at the War College, I cast aside that thought to find lessons in Predictably Irrational that might aid my decision making efforts. Ariely asserts his book addresses human irrationality – the absence of reason – which is not only more common than most humans believe, but predictable. The book’s underlying assumption is that we are “pawns in a game whose forces we largely fail to comprehend”.…
