Personal Reflective Essay: My Personal Leadership Experience

Because I have always had a calling to help people, social work feels like a major that has designed for me. My connection to social work first started with my personal experiences. Growing up as a child, my family and our happiness was disrupted by the violence and corruption on my home country The Democratic Republic of Congo. When I was seven years old, my father, who worked as an army general, was assassinated by a political group that was trying to rise to power. Social injustice was part of my life from childhood. After that, I was separated from my mother and siblings that I used to see everyday, and I thought they died. It took five years of moving and living in different countries before I found peace and security through United Nations. I endured abuse and neglect, the loss of my dignity as a woman in society, and missed ten years of schooling. These harsh experiences shaped my life and my unique perspectives. But even in my darkest times, various people have helped me with things like clothing or advice and encouragement. I have been blessed by these people who have a sense of humanity. People who I had never met before took me in as a sister and friend, and this is what motivated me to want to do similar things for my community. In my opinion, leadership is an art that influences others to attain a common goal. An effective leader should be humble and strong; someone who can give and take advices to and from others. One cannot be a leader if one cannot follow. In my community, I have had a chance to live by example by volunteering my time to helping others. Furthermore, I am actively involved in school activities, such as choir and other activities that inspire others to make a difference. My hope is for the MSW program to add more to my leadership knowledge so I can do my job
