It was a hot cloudy day and you could smell the fresh smell of the freshly cut grass. The football team and i were ready and hyped for our first home football game. We were hyped up and ready to destroy Hill-Gustat. They won the coin toss and got the ball first, we kicked the ball to them and ran and scored a touchdown. I wasn’t worried because i knew we could beat them. “ready set go go” “blurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” all i heard go through my ear as the referee blew the whistle. We had a penalty for being of sides, we got back down on our three point position and got ready to run the play. Down set go go Shamar the quarterback threw the ball to Erskine and made a touchdown. We made like 3 touchdowns and we were winning 18 to 6 but by then we had 20 penalties and that wasn’t good.

Errrrrrrrrrrrr! the game was over and we had won eighteen to six but we had too many penalties, and we knew what that meant. beep beep beep beep, my alarm went off and i got out of bed and the first thing i thought was do i want to go to football practice and run or stay home and relax. I decided to go to football practice and face the consequences.
“I want all of you down the hill in five minutes” coach said
Everyone ran down the hill faster than a car, we were ready for the punishment. “You will run twenty five forties” coach

There was two outs and runners on second and third. The ball was hit and went between our third baseman's legs, the runner from third scored with ease. Their coach sent the guy from second and our left fielder Jackson Mayday was our last hope. He threw past the cutoff man and it was a perfect throw to our catcher Isaac Turner and he tagged the runner ending the game. We all threw our gloves and hats in the air and celebrated like crazy kids.…

As the team ran along, Coach Timmons rode beside the course in his car offering advice and encouragement. Within a few miles, as he related to me, the lack of mileage over the summer began to take its toll and “I started to fall back.” After a few minutes, he had fallen well behind the others when the coach rode up next to him and said: “Get in.” Thinking that his workout was gratefully over, Coach Timmons drove up a few hundred yards ahead of the lead pack, pulled over to the side of the road and said: “Get out.” And, then something to the effect: “Don’t fall behind again or you’re walking back.”…

As the sun plummets to its end on a Friday evening, in a small town just north of the capital of Texas. Businesses become calm and streets become lifeless, as an entire community packs into a stadium anxious to see their team go into battle versus that week’s opponent. The level of excitement that has been accumulating all week, rings throughout the stadium as everyone longs for the opening kickoff to heal their Friday football fever. As a four year old I wasn’t able to realize that I was witnessing the greatest football team to ever come through Burnet High School, as they demolished every team that was brave enough to step in front of them week after week.…

The Backfield Package by Thomas J. Dygard is a fiction sports story about a football team that has a chance to win the Rend Lake Conference championship in back to back seasons. The story mainly focuses on four players Joe Mitchell the quarterback, Tracy Jackson a wide receiver, Coley Brewster a running back, and Lew Preston the fullback and where these players will decide to go to college to play football at. The time that this story goes on is unknown, but I would assume that the time is sometime in the nineties or pretty close to there. The story takes place though in southern Illinois at a small high school named Hillcrest High.…
