Personal Narrative: Food Recovery Network

Improved Essays
My experiences volunteering for Food Recovery Network and the Knox Farm have been quite transformative. I never would have thought that I would have my quench for volunteering come from taking School and Society. Initially, I wasn’t completely sure about whether or not I would enjoy the experiences, but I ended up getting so much out of all the experiences.
When it came to the first couple weeks volunteering for Food Recovery Network, I ended up falling in love with the concept of donating food that would have been wasted to the cafeteria to places that need help. I volunteered almost every monday and friday then an entire week. It was actually really easy to go in every time and get pounds upon pounds of fresh and tasty food put into bins and take them to shelters and areas all around Galesburg. However, there were

It makes me think about all the other terms where classes that require hours may not be offered. Where are all these organizations going to get volunteers if there are not enough student buy in? Because of this, I expanded the days I volunteered with FRN and thought about the future of the club. I love seeing the people who are receiving the food we give. Knowing that people are able to benefit from our simple work is so inspiring. Next year, I may be interested in becoming more involved with the club whether through exec or becoming a driver. The Knox Farm was also a very great volunteering experience for me. I learned a decent amount of skills when it came to gardening, planting, landscaping, and more. I found it fascinating that digging with a shovel was one of the most lethargic things I have ever done. I enjoyed weeding, seed starting, and everything under the sun. The difference between the farm and FRN was the reward I felt after the end of them. With the farm, I had callused hands, sweat, and dirt all over me to feel that I accomplished something. For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

For my fourth activity I volunteered at the student run UT Microfarm for two hours equaling one unit. During my time there I was asked to perform a variety of tasks including painting, weeding, and mulching. I also leaned about sustainable farming methods and what types of plants were grown at the farm. My first task at the UT Microfarm was to paint the outside of the shed. This was an attempt to beautify the farm to entice people to volunteer and support it.…

The Northwestern R-I FFA Chapter is looking to reorganize the FFA Alumni. At one point, Northwestern R-I had an FFA Alumni, which was created to support and promote the FFA organization, FFA activities and agricultural education on local, state, and national levels. Personally I think having an FFA Alumni will benefit not only this chapter, but it will also benefit this community and surrounding areas. According to “Starting a local FFA Alumni Chapter Handbook,” FFA is a lifelong organization that begins in the seventh grade and lasts as long as you want it. Members can begin as student members and then activate their alumni membership or they may simply begin as alumni.…

I went to their orientation and heard what they stood for and what they would help me accomplish. I gave it some time and after a while I decided to attend the Gerald Ford Job Corps. It was difficult coming here for the first time. I did not like the dorms, they were cold and I did not feel comfortable being with the other students since I had such a hard time understanding English. I didn’t, and still don’t like the food.…

I am greatly honored to be one of the selected students who are being considered for the Spring induction of National Honor Society. As a current eleventh grade student, I believe that I have exceeded in demonstrating all four qualities of the National Honor Society. With my previous experience in the National Junior Honor Society, I have bestowed the ideals to my community as of the beginning of my middle school career. This has led me to take pride in the community around me and help create a greater society with the foundation that the National Junior Honor Society has introduced to me. The quality of Service is an ideal that I can directly relate to through personal experience, therefore creating significance in my life.…

My experience at the Houston Food Bank was rewarding, fun, and enlightening. It was rewarding knowing that I was filling bags of rice to help those in need. At one point, I went outside and saw a long line of vehicles waiting to get food, and that, made volunteering worth it. It was an enlightening experience because I have always thought the Houston Food Bank was for homeless people, but it is not. It is for working people who have a hard time buying groceries after paying their bills.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

On first thought, the word “volunteer” itself brings about connotations of selflessness, of community service, and of outward devotion. In no way are these translations incorrect, yet they only scratch the surface of what it truly means to be a volunteer--both in wholehearted spirit and on the University of Tennessee campus. Don’t get me wrong; dedicating one’s self to community service is great and all, and I know that the time I’ve spent doing so has been instrumental in my awareness of privilege and human compassion. In fact, I believe that the knowledge gained in actual volunteer work is a hefty piece of the puzzle that comprises the Volunteer spirit. Without a proper understanding of the roles we play in the lives of others around us, we might as well be walking robots, all steely and apathetic and such.…

Anytime we perform a service for a community, we hope that it provides the best outcomes for people and that the community actually wants our “help.” Volunteers need to follow the ideals of the community perspective: mutuality, reciprocity, humility, respect, and sustainability in order to understand the community’s needs and prevent unnecessary harm. If communication is clear and consistent, then the community should prosper from the service being done. If the service is international, students should research some of the current issues in that country since they are not as familiar with the cultural aspects. For example, if the community needs a well and asks for it, then that is what the volunteers should provide not a schoolhouse.…

    My Philosophy Of Medicine

Medicine fascinated me even when I was a child. I remember being about eight years old when my pediatrician asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Without hesitation, I told him I wanted to be a doctor. I view medicine as discovery, the chance to learn the science surrounding the human body and develop the skills that will allow me to heal others. As I entered college, I pursued experiences that exposed me to the world of medicine, becoming more involved within my community and university.…

Most teenagers would not be excited to give up their phone for a week so that they could live with a group of teenagers whom they had never met previously so that they could spend time during their summer vacation doing service while at school; however, that is exactly what I and each of the other participants on my Adventure WV Habitat trip did at the end of this June. I really enjoyed this trip because although most people could not imagine spending a week disconnected from technology, I actually found it to be refreshing, and I found that it helped me to stay more engaged with the activities of the trip as well as with the other participants. During our time spent helping out at the Habitat for Humanity worksite, I was able to learn how…

During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…

When I was younger, I was always criticized for being too skinny. People would mumble “chicken-legs” or “toothpick” behind my back and sometimes even to my face. I’m not sure if it was me finally reaching adolescence, but I sure did change my eating habits.…

    I Want To Be Homeless

Elizabeth Andrew once said “volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” This is an interesting quote because, being a college student, I don 't always have the time to be able to help people. The problem with this is that I always want to—I want to make a difference in the lives of many people, even if they do not care or do not want the help. I personally feel that to be able to do that, I would have to make the time, not because I feel that I must, but because I want to. At first, it was difficult to find what I was going to be doing for my volunteer project and originally wanted to work with the elderly.…
