Personal Narrative: First Flight High School Community

Being a member of the First Flight High school community has forever impacted my life. Opportunities for travel and mentoring younger peers have helped to shape me and prepare me to be an active community member.
Freshman year: full of newness and excitement. This was the year I traveled to New York City with the Fine Arts from First Flight High School. I had heard many people talk about how New Yorkers are mean or the streets are filthy. But I saw magic in that city. I saw my first Broadway show, The Phantom of the Opera. I have always felt a connection to the audience when I perform. They laugh and it never throws me; it propels me deeper into my character’s world. When I saw Christine sing, I felt her connection to me and my peers. I felt the magic of a real live performance, full of professional actors. Sure I have been immersed in the plot of a show before, but never this much with a live show. I could see

I practiced my monologue for honors and spoke in a British accent for the better part of two months. My director explained to me the realness of every moment on stage brought Alice to life. That I did not play Alice. I became her. The true highlight of my Alice in Wonderland experience came from greeting my littlest fans. Following each performance, the cast and crew go out to greet the patrons, and little girls came up to me and wanted a pictures with me. I’m sure they were excited, but they have no idea how they solidified my future. After playing Alice, I knew that theatre wasn’t just my career, it was my way to help people. If I could make these little girls happy for two hours, or teach them to imagine and dream, then I’ve left a better footprint in this world. Mentoring younger peers inspires me, and teaches me about empathy and about myself. I love to give because watching others succeed and be joyful makes me

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

Stage-managing the spring musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying by Abe Burrows, was probably the biggest accomplishment and challenge I've had so far. What stage-managing is, it's essentially an assistant director with a lot of other jobs added onto it. Those jobs include calling cues for the show, making rehearsal reports, taking all the notes you could possibly imagine for a show and working with not one but 4 other directors. . There were many challenges that faced me while working on the musical.…

In today’s world our entertainment industry is dominated by pre-recorded theater like television and movies. The necessity of Theatre, the real time performing art, is beginning to be questioned. Despite the claims of the theatre being obsolete, it’s influence penetrates deeper into our existence than many would suspect. Theatre’s social footprint is one of its most recognizable factors; according to the 2012 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA), forty-nine percent of adults that recorded some involvement in the arts sat in on either visual or performing arts (USDC, pg.8). With such a large percentage of people remaining involved in the performing arts it is very difficult to say that theatre is irrelevant in our modern times.…

The actors had a lot of energy that undoubtedly captured the viewer’s attention. Each actor had a certain characteristic that made him or her truly fascinating to watch. They were able to interact with each and every audience member. This left me, a viewer, who was in the middle of the room, feeling as though I was in the play. The plays story may have been their biggest obstacle, however.…

Allison Atkenson Kevin Long Musical Theatre History December 16, 2015 Issues confronted At the start of the year my classmates and I were asked to define the true purpose of theatre. Our responses ranged from “a combination of song and spectacle” to “emotions communicated through spoken word, music, and movement.” But overall, we concluded it was an art form that was meant to both teach and entertain. Musical theatre has and will likely forever remain a vehicle to discuss societal issues and controversial topics.…

Talking about my start to musical theatre makes me delighted to think back to when I was younger. Thinking about the first musicals that I was in reminds me of how thrilled I was to discover new things about performing. I never got nervous to go all out and to do something big.…

Matilda. Wicked. HAMILTON. These are all Broadway shows that I have had the privilege of seeing; moreover, they have been a crucial part of my love and respect for theater. When I sit in a theater like the Richard Rogers or Shubert, I am overwhelmed with joy like a kid in a candy store by the plush red velvet seats, the buzz of the crowd as the ushers attempt to control their hurried fever, the ornate designs on the walls surrounding me, and most especially the stage either bare or covered by a red curtain that is about to be filled with the magic of a Broadway show.…

Excitement. That was my immediate reaction when I was cast in the winter musical. Theater had always been a secret passion of mine but until this year I had never auditioned, or even acted at all. For most of my life, I have loved the performing arts, particularly theater. One of the first musicals I ever admired was The Phantom of the Opera, which a friend introduced me to in the 7th grade. As soon as I watched it, I knew that I needed to experience it live on stage. Fortunately, after lots of begging and pleading, I convinced my mother to take me to New York to see it on Broadway during the summer of 2014. Starring in the production at that time were two of my theater idols: Norm Lewis and Sierra Boggess, and needless to say I was beyond ecstatic to see them.…

Relating to adults: not as hard as becoming one My senior year I was given the opportunity to co-direct a Shakespeare play at Families Inspiring Leaders Academy (FILA), the homeschool commonwealth I attended. The commonwealth’s Shakespeare class performed a different comedy by the Bard every year. However, this new perspective would soon present many obstacles that would greatly impact and shape my growth as a young adult.…
