Freshman year: full of newness and excitement. This was the year I traveled to New York City with the Fine Arts from First Flight High School. I had heard many people talk about how New Yorkers are mean or the streets are filthy. But I saw magic in that city. I saw my first Broadway show, The Phantom of the Opera. I have always felt a connection to the audience when I perform. They laugh and it never throws me; it propels me deeper into my character’s world. When I saw Christine sing, I felt her connection to me and my peers. I felt the magic of a real live performance, full of professional actors. I practiced my monologue for honors and spoke in a British accent for the better part of two months. My director explained to me the realness of every moment on stage brought Alice to life. That I did not play Alice. I became her. The true highlight of my Alice in Wonderland experience came from greeting my littlest fans. Following each performance, the cast and crew go out to greet the patrons, and little girls came up to me and wanted a pictures with me. I’m sure they were excited, but they have no idea how they solidified my future. After playing Alice, I knew that theatre wasn’t just my career, it was my way to help people. If I could make these little girls happy for two hours, or teach them to imagine and dream, then I’ve left a better footprint in this world. Mentoring younger peers inspires me, and teaches me about empathy and about myself. I love to give because watching others succeed and be joyful makes me
