Finally Living Out my Calling

Nurses are awesome! My life has been touched many times by nurses. They’ve been there to

help me through the birth of my children. They informed me and comforted me when I had surgery.

They’ve also held my hand and cried with me when I had a miscarriage.

I believe that being a nurse is my calling in life. It took me a long time to recognize it, but here

we are! It has been a long journey. I’ve been drawn to the medical field for a long time. I applied for a

job doing laundry at Carilion 10 years ago. My hopes were to get my foot in the door and utilize their

tuition assistance program to get my nursing degree. I didn’t get the job. Life happened. I had babies

and my dream of becoming a nurse faded away.

I’d search for jobs and apply for medical office positions in hopes to fulfill the longing of being

involved, some way in medicine. I worked at the Rescue Mission in Roanoke for five years. They finally

had a job opening for clinic receptionist and I was so excited to apply! I would be cross-trained on

drawing blood and checking vitals. I inquired about the position and then I decided that I was just unable

to go full-time at that point due to homeschooling my kids. Now, my kids are in school. I have time to

focus on my goals and dream.

I currently work as a part-time receptionist at Richfield Rehab. Working at Richfield has renewed

my passion for nursing. I see them working and I just want to be a part of it. I’ve never been one to just

sit back and watch. I’m a doer. I want to be the one building relationships with the patients. I want to

encourage them to meet their goals, get healthy, and return to their normal selves. I do understand that

not all stories I see will be success stories. I know that there will be some patients unable to return to

their former selves. I also know that some won’t make it home at all, but I’d still like to be there with

them for their last weeks, days, or hours to make them as comfortable as possible. I know the work

Southern Appalachia holds a special place in my heart. For as long as I can remember, my family and I have spent two or three weeks a year in the North Georgia Mountains. It seems it is only natural then, that I decided to acquire my Biology degree at Young Harris College — in the heart of the mountains. This location not only allowed for wonderful professors, but an environment where the scenery and locals make an impression each day. I have long been interested in medicine, but did not learn of the Physician Assistant profession until later in my sophomore year of college.…
