Gilbert Keith Chesterton once said, “When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” I didn’t realize the full meaning of this until I was 10 at a modeling/acting competition in Atlanta.
“Wake up, Johanna!” My mom called. “Today’s the day.” Groaning, I started to crawl out bed, not wanting to leave the blankets that wrapped around me like a cocoon (figurative language). Suddenly, I realized exactly what she meant. I was going to get my big break today! I jumped out of my warm covers and got dressed, rushing downstairs.
My sister was already at the kitchen table, enjoying a delicious plate of pancakes with sweet syrup that tickled my nose (specific details for effect). I sat down

“‘Wrecking ball’ is a way better song.” (humor)
“It’s time to go,” my mom interjected before we could get into a fight. “We don’t want to be late.” We all loaded into the car and drove to Atlanta. After what seemed like forever, we stopped at a huge building with people going every which way (figurative language). My sister read the sign out front, “Hosting the 14th annual Acting Program for Kids.”
At the front doors, guards asked to see our passes, which we wore around our neck. He led us to a huge auditorium where almost all the seats were filled. My sister and I were led to a different room where the kids were divided up.
Our room had a man and woman leading. They proceeded to teach us the basics of being on stage and how the procedure would go. Each person would walk out on stage and read from a script. From there, some people would be eliminated and the rest would go onto Round 2 and so on until only a few people were left.
After they took the first person, I whispered to my sister, “I’m going to be chosen to be in the commercial.”
“Yeah, right,” she rebutted. All we had to after that was wait. The man stayed in the room with the rest of us while the woman led the kids to the stage. I wasn’t nervous because I knew for sure that I would make it and become famous. I could already see myself starring in movies and tv

Everything I had rehearsed was locked into my mind. Going from coloring on the stage to being thrown showed how intense the show actually was. The show was a violent and a non-kid show. The show was based around the time of the vietnam war so I had to get used to the sound of gunshots. After being thrown to the ground I would often peek my head up and look into the crowd that I could actually see now that I was near the front of the stage.…

During this semester, I have grown tremendously as a writer. I have become more open to noticing the flaws that I have and had in my writing. There are many parts of writing that I was ignorant about when it comes to writing such as the rhetorical appeals of pathos, ethos, and logos. In my previous piece of writing, I was one minded whenever I wrote which has drastically changed over the course of the semester. However, the most difficult aspect when writing is the collaborating the different parts of the writing and making them work.…

Like most children who grew up in a bilingual environment, I had trouble discerning Japanese and English when I was growing up in California, since I spent most of the time with my mother’s family. Because of that, any English I absorbed through PBS shows was mashed together with Japanese to form Japanglish. Then I briefly attended preschool in Naha, which made it even worse. I barely made it to elementary school. My kindergarten teacher recommended me to stay another year, but my parents refused to allow it.…
