SEGUÍN, JUAN NEPOMUCENO (1806–1890). Juan Seguín, political and military figure of the Texas Revolution and Republic of Texas, was born in San Antonio on October 27, 1806, the elder of two sons of Juan José María Erasmo Seguín and María Josefa Becerra. Although he had little formal schooling, Juan was encouraged by his father to read and write, and he appears to have taken some interest in music. At age nineteen he married María Gertrudis Flores de Abrego, a member of one of San Antonio's most important ranching families. They had ten children, among whom Santiago was a mayor of Nuevo Laredo and Juan, Jr., was an officer in the Mexican military in the 1860s and 1870s.…
The Gutierrez Magee Expedition of 1812. The Gutierrez Magee expedition, left a humongous scar on the state of Texas. Unlike previous wars and fights, the Expedition not only changed Texas, but also many other southwestern states. It also made possible for an expansion to the United States territory, in a magnificent way.…
He famously composed his “letter to the people of Texas and all Americans in the world” in which he declared “I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country. VICTORY OR DEATH.” (Petite M.D., 1999). In the mean time, Antonio López de Santa Anna managed to receive several reinforcement and started preparing for a final assault.…
Lucy Horn 4-27-15 English~3rd hour Social Studies~6th hour Total War In 1846 war broke out between two neighboring countries. “US historians refer to this event as ‘The Mexican War’, in Mexico its called ‘The US Invasion’ (Doc. C, paragraph 1).” The Mexican War had lasted two years, 1846 to 1848. Ten years before the war, Texas had declared its independence from Mexico in 1836. Not long before that, in 1821, Mexico had declared independence from Spain.…
The Battle of the Alamo was a significant turning point in the war for Texas Independence. This battlefield analysis will briefly explore the reasons behind why the battle took place, the strategic significance of the Alamo, who the participants were on both sides, what actions took place, and the failures that occurred both strategic and tactically. We will present an alternate outcome of this battle and explore what may have happened if the Texan defenders would have won the battle. The failure of the Texans to defend the Alamo concentrated around their lack of accurate and timely intelligence collection, the non-reporting of actionable intelligence as it pertained to the enemy’s composition and courses of action, and failure of higher command to supply the outpost with proper logistic support.…

The Alamo we all remember learning about it, how the Texans fought for the freedom of Texas, and the quote that lives on today "Remember Alamo" which Sam Houston shouted in remembrance of his lost brothers while he his army chased away Santa Anna and his large army (Remember). I have questions, why should we remember the Alamo? What happened from the time the little church was used to March 6, 1836(?check) when Santa Anna attacked, how did the United States help with battle, was there any hostility between the soldiers and between the native Mexicans and the soldiers in the Alamo…
When one watches The Patriot and The Alamo, one can note a common theme in the sense that these people joined revolutions because they felt a personal connection in defending their beliefs and homeland. Not only were they working to protect their families, but they also became empowered by the sense of community as they banded together to fight for the same causes. In both films, these people were dissatisfied with the current status of their government, and they assembled militias in an attempt to secede from their rulers and establish a new system in which suits their expectations of a government. These particular patriots are extremely passionate about their country, so much that they were willing to make major sacrifices such as abandoning…
During the next few years, the problems continued and people from each side were captured and imprisoned. Although the relationship between Anglo Americans and Mexican officials seemed to be worsening, some of my Anglo American friends believe they had an ally in Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. General López de Santa Anna was a Federalist and had won victories against Centralist troops. Since he promised to follow the Mexican Constitution of 1824, which pleased the Texans, the Texans responded by adopting the Turtle Bay Resolutions.…
The Texas Revolution seems like an almost forgotten conflict in the United States. Although it may not be very relevant today, it played a crucial part in the history of the United States. Without the Texas Revolution, America would be a very different place today. Texas was essential to helping the United States become the superpower it is today, and if Texas were to not be recognized as a state, the United States would have been at a disadvantage. There were many driving factors as to why Teas wanted to be independent, and many reasons why Mexico wanted to control the land.…
I am sincerely sorry, for not writing to you for a very long time now. I bring terrible new. Things have not been well, my mom is very sick. She gets worse everyday, I blame the Americans for this. If the Americans never forced us to move then less people would have died.…
The term “Manifest Destiny” is defined as ‘obvious’ or ‘justified’ fate. First coined by John O’Sullivan, the term also foretold the duties and responsibilities that the Americans at the time. New lands and peoples were to be exposed to the blessings of democracy, some calling it a “great experiment of liberty”. The Manifest Destiny took many forms, like treaties, war, and settlement. Expansion during the 1800’s was deemed inevitable for many reasons.…
It was only a matter of time until two growing nations would collide and fight over continental dominance. Land would cause a war that would determine the future and amount of power one nation would have over the other. Both the United States and Mexico sought to expand, grow, and develop into a prosperous country. But destiny only had plans of success for one. Those plans were meant for the United States of America.…

“One nation under God, with liberty and Justice for all” (Pledge of Allegiance). Powerful words with an even powerful meaning but has America been able to uphold this pledge of allegiance? NO. I am a proud African American who is hurt and appalled by the way people of color have been treated throughout history as well as the present day. It is not easy to live in a world whose system works against you and aims to keep you down. I want to encourage my people to take a stand for their race, love their melanin and the skin they’re in.…
