The sun shone overhead as students streamed out of the Academy of Intellectual Development, eager to start a weekend free from the stresses of school. The shadow of the four story facility loomed over half the courtyard. Windows covered most of the building, with polished silver steel taking up the space between. Senna sat in the middle of the courtyard atop the stainless steel fountain resting in the center of the walkway.
Senna sat on her white denim jacket separating her from the scalding metal. She was wearing a short-sleeved green top, letting the sunlight burn her arms. His voice sounded smug and confident. She strained to see him clearly, but his dark hoodie made it near impossible. “It’s getting late, love. What’s got you out?”
“Oh, believe it or not, I was looking for a guy to chat it up with in an alley that smells like raw sewage.” She turned to walk away. Annie was probably waiting at the door for her.
“Wait, Red,” he called. She stopped in her tracks at the sound of the nickname she was stuck with throughout her childhood. She faced him, hoping the darkness hid the rage in her eyes or the red of her cheeks. “You’re a little rough around the edges. I like that. So...” He reached toward the ground, most likely into a bag Senna couldn’t see, then pulled out a pill bottle with a slight silver gleam. “I’ll cut you a deal.”
Fear stuffed her throat. She recognized the silver gleam, It was the sign of augmentation pills. Unaltered, unused, ready to be matched to a user. She stumbled for words, but could only muster a weak, “What...”
He approached slowly, attaching the DNA siphon to the bottom of the bottle. She flinched at the sight of the needle. “It’s okay, Red. Aug pills are no big deal.” He rolled up her jacket sleeve. “You strike me as someone who’s always had attitude, but never knew what to do with it. This can help, you’ll finally have a way to channel that ‘tude. And since I like you, Red, I’ll only charge you fifty
