It was about 10 o’clock in our small town. I was with my friend Thomas going down to the local convenience store for soda. Nobody except us were around, everyone else in the town was at home or asleep. That’s when it happened.

“We found you and your friend in an alley unconscious. So, we decided to bring you here.” He then looked around the room, with his arms up as if he was displaying it.

“Why are we strapped to our beds?”

“We thought you might panic, like…” He paused and looked over at Thomas. Thomas stopped panicking now, he became too tired to panic anymore. “What are your names?”

You could see people working aimlessly through the broken windows, tired and distraught looks on their faces. I thought I was surprised until I saw the look on Thomas’ face. He had a better view than me, with the five inches he had on me in height. He was in awe, with the sight of how different this place was than our home. Thomas then started backing

Buildings were abandoned almost daily, and as a result, empty lots sprawled over the city like weeds in gardens. Dark clouds had permanent residents in the sky, no matter the season. News of violent deaths were commonplace, and every time one was announced, you only hoped and prayed it wasn’t someone you knew. For almost half of my life, that environment was an aspect of my very being.…

My midnight black eight-year-old eyes stare intently at the tall man standing in front of me. He wears a purple and yellow striped shirt, a very unflattering color combination, with thick sand-tan cargo shorts, and piled on top of his head is a massive brown afro. Who is that? I wonder as I clasp my sister’s sweaty chubby hand tighter. The man steps aside to reveal a big banner on the doorway.…

Right from the beginning, I noticed a pungent odor lingering in the air. Ironically, the smell reminded me of my Uncle Alonzo, who would often live out of his car or vacant structures around the city. I was so nervous I was basically shaking, not paying attention I had almost tripped and fell over a homeless man sleeping in the lobby. I would later find out this gentleman would be the one who I would be working side by side with the majority of the night.
