He slowly got down on one knee, and pulled a black box from his pocket as he did so. “Antonio…” I gasped, a hand going to my mouth. “I loved you since I first laid my eyes on you back when I was 19, and saw you sacrifice yourself for your child. Jennifer Montiago, will you take my hand in marriage and marry me?” He asked, waiting for my answer. “Yes! Antonio yes!” I squealed with excitement, tears streaming down my face.

Deanna, leggy, beautiful, and daring, came a long way from a rugged childhood and the time of liquor bottles aimed at her mother’s head. So said a Washington Post reporter in 2008, “Councilwoman Deanna Flin is a fresh face and a breath of fresh air in D.C. politics.” In the eyes of her colleagues (boozing old school boys with potty mouths and potbellies), she personified Hillary Clinton, the little engine that would, if she could, overturn the political status quo. “Too big for her britches,” said one, which struck Deanna as funny, but not in the ha-ha-ha way.…

Outside the diner, a black pickup rolled to a stop while I peered out the window at the drizzling rain, a constant in the sleepy little town of Forks. If I were honest with myself, I didn’t believe that he would show up, even after conceding to meet him at his request; however, there he was getting out of his truck, striding determinedly to the diner’s door. Shortly after the bell over the front door jingled, he stood next to my booth at the back of the diner at our appointed time. “You showed up.” I glanced up from my lunch before shrugging my shoulders nonchalantly, since I was never easily impressed.…
