I stopped volunteering at the Humane Society and put all of my energy into the house. I cleaned, prepared for showings, prepared as much as I could for our future move. As I went through every room and made a keep and discard pile, I wrote myself a mental list and had it memorized in a few weeks. 1- I wasn’t depressed after Kat moved out. I just didn't know how to only be consumed with my needs. 2- I didn't want to have the party. If Paul listened to me, it never would have happened. 3- It is an act so natural, to kiss, that I didn't even think to pull away. 4- Diane and Travis’s happiness was false. His blue eyes looked small once he stood in front of me. And finally, they weren’t blank or content. They were angry. "Why did you lie to me?" "Lie to you?" "I called Travis. Diane answered. She didn't talk to you or send us that plastic thing." The only thing I could say, because my curiosity crept out and skated across my brain, was, "You talked to Diane? Why would you do that?” The last time I cried was when Kat moved out. After an hour of moving boxes up two flights of stairs to her dorm room, I got back in the car to drive home and waited for Paul who was using the restroom. I looked at my daughter through the window, talking to a boy with a backwards baseball cap on. Her hands were on her hips. She had let her light hair grow long that summer and it seemed to float down her back like a cloud. I remembered mine being the same length when I was her age. What was Kat saying to him, though?
