“Wait, everything is falling apart out there. We can’t just go back the way we came,” I said as a slight rumble from the cave was heard in the distance. Charlie knew I was right. The risk was too much to return in the same route, but we needed the room that took us here. These pods weren’t capable of flying us back to Red Star, which was probably blown to bits by now. I’d be worried about Guardian except she had a shield protecting her. So we just had to get back to Red Star and leave before it sank to the ocean floor.
“There’s another path,” Benjamin said from behind RIPPER. It was as if they were conjoined twins connecting at their backs. Benjamin coughed after his spiel and swallowed. “One man certainly will not contain Mother Country’s last remaining defense.” I was about to yell at him. My face was burning. My chest was stinging. My heart was dying. If I had to depart on a one-man suicide trip into Hell, I wouldn’t reluctantly go for Evelyn. I’d charge in like a kamikaze. I wouldn’t flinch. I wouldn’t blink. I’d fight until I couldn’t and then I’d fight some more. I would clear the path for her because I loved her and she was going to live, even if I didn’t.
“He’ll be fine,” Charlie broke the silence. His eyes meet mine as if he believed it. I wouldn’t fail her. I nodded to strengthen his confidence. Roberta protested, but only until I hugged her and kissed her and whispered, “We have to save her. The baby is important. More than any of us, I feel it.” Tears streamed down her face but she didn’t sob inconsolably. Roberta was strong like that. She had so much inner strength. So much conviction to root her feet down.
