My breath comes in short quick bursts. I have an ache in my side, that makes each step I take feel like there are needles digging into my skin--and still, I run on. I can hear their voices behind me. Getting closer. Gasping I look for a place to hide, and spotting a large tree, I run to it. I lean on the trunk grateful for the rest. My head is pounding and my blood is filled with adrenaline. My legs shake as I struggle to control my breathing. I peer out. Two people come into view. They wear dark clothes and are covered in dirt. “Where’d he go,” Jase asks bending over--hands on his knees. “I don’t know. Why don’t you ask that rock?” Danny answers pointing to a rock close to where I am hiding. I freeze. Wondering if Jase will actually come …show more content…
I sigh with relief. HUGE mistake. Danny and Jase both turn around. I hold my breath. Danny’s eyes scan the surrounding forest and his gaze stops on my tree. Gulping, I slowly backed away. I’ve gone three steps when my foot lands on a dry branch. It snaps, the sound like a gunshot in the stillness of the forest. I turn and run. “We’ve got you Lukas,” Danny yells crashing through the underbrush after me. “Only if you can catch me!” I yell back. Ducking under a branch I see another place to hide. I turn towards it then stop. Something was pulling at me. It felt familiar. I take a step away the hiding place I have seen and gasp. The tugging sensation has gotten stronger. I look back the way I have come, Jase and Danny have almost caught up with me. Acting on impulse I turn and dash off through the woods, again.

I want to stop, I have to stop, but I can’t. The sensation is too strong. It drives me forward. Every time I feel like I am going to fall over with exhaustion the sensation tugs at me harder than before. Distantly I realize that I have left Jase and Danny far behind, and that I should rest---get my breath back, but I can’t stop. I have to keep

As I took hold of the gun the overwhelming feelings flooded over me, I heard the whispers of the trees echo through my head. Reminiscing the last time I aimed a fire arm, the last time I was caught. I took a step closer to the gravel and dirt road, my heart slowed as my breath caught in my throat I glanced around, the trees danced on the gravel, with a whistle. The heat waves radiated the yellow light from the afternoon sun as it set over yonder. Taking in a breath that filled my lungs, I took another step forward releasing the inhale letting the nerves fade out slowly.…

"So you really want to know how I got here? Ok." Slowly I wiped my glasses against my shirt, 3 rotations for each lens. The rain battered against the windows of the diner I had just entered; I trodged to the far right corner and sat in an empty booth. I took of my boots and slapped them against the wall three times in a futile attempt to shake loose some of the water; placing down my boots I opened my bag and removed a dry pair of socks, and put them on my feet.…
