What do you do when you think you’re being followed by some creepy old guy at 1 in the morning, and your manager has disappeared off the face of the planet? Find the nearest customer and pretend they’re your best friend, apparently.

That’s exactly what Jay did, as she watched the shadow trail her from the corner of her eye. Creepy old guys were a normal part of working the overnight shift at a 24-hour convenience store, but usually they were only after a pack of crisps or a carton of beer, before leaving. They didn’t usually hang around, or trail store employees.

“And to answer your first question, I live on the other side of the city.”

Tic raised an eyebrow. “Across the city? Then why don’t you get a job that’s closer? There are tons more local supermarkets over there that probably pay better too.”
“My mum has connections – and no one else wanted me.” She paused for a second, an unreadable emotion flashing in her eyes.
“What about you? Where do you work and where do you live?”
“I live 5 minutes that way,” She pointed in said direction, “And I work in the city.”
“Hypocrite!”
“I work in an office building. They aren’t everywhere, unlike convenience stores.”
“Still a hypocrite!”
