The softest whimpers, like wind whisking through the leaves on a tree, that’s the noise that wakes me. At first, I think I’m imaging it, and try to return to the deep sleep I left, but then it comes again, louder this time. I role over half asleep to find two tiny hands reaching out for me in the dark. Green eyes pierce through the blackness, like two tiny moons in the sky. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I groan before sitting up. At this point, I look like a bear coming out of hibernation. I’m confused, my eyesight is blurred, and all I want is to curl back up in the warm bed. The chill hits my arms raising dozens of goosebumps on my arms. I never want him to lose that look. That look of utter admiration. “Don’t want to sleep,” he groans, “Wanna story.” Glancing at the angel beside me, I smile. “How about you go to sleep, and I sing you a song?” He narrows his eyes at me thinking over the idea. He smiles at me sleepily before nodding. “I’ll love you forever. I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living my baby you’ll be,” I hum. It was never really meant to be a lullaby but a story, Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. “I’m not a baby,” He mumbles, and I smile wearily because he’s right. He’s three now, hardly a baby, but still a child. The time flies by, one day he is barely crawling around, and before I know it, I put him down and he doesn’t want to be picked up. “Kadie, I love you,” he whispers, stressing a duh sound. This moment is a calm in the storm. Tomorrow he may wake up and resist me, so I’ll take the love while I can.
