My eyes were still filled with emotion, and I was blinded by tears as thick as fog.…

The shadow of the four story facility loomed over half the courtyard. Windows covered most of the building, with polished silver steel taking up the space between. Senna sat in the middle of the courtyard atop the stainless steel fountain resting in the center of the walkway. Senna sat on her white denim jacket separating her from the scalding metal.…

There are some events that are so terrifying that you can remember everything about when it happened. For me, that event is when I came out to my mom. She had called me into her room so that I could listen to her read Bible verses condemning homosexuality, which is always a fun time. The room only had one dim light on and the curtains were closed, making the room almost as gloomy as me at the time. Throughout the entire night, I woke up with feverish bursts time and time again. I dreamt of death. My mother and father’s bony skulls were glinting at me through the blackness. I replayed the same scene over and over again: the persistent screaming in the background as a dull buzzing sounded beside my ears. And then the sound of gunshots exploding in the air as raiders crowded into our room.…
