It hurt trying to get up from my groggy sleep. When I felt a sharp pain at my throat I suddenly remembered why I was there. I panicked, trying to get at my throat to protect it as I opened my eyes. I wasn’t able to see well but I could see enough of the man standing over me with bloody hands and a knife.
“The anesthesia is wearing off! Inject 12 more cc into her IV.” the man yelled. I fought against my restraints on my wrists. I made one last feeble animal noise before I was unconscious again.

I dreamed that I was in a town that had children. All of them were smiling as they ran around and… played. It was almost like the vague memories I had of what it was like before the world is like it is now. I felt more at home than I had when I was at the Orphan house and in my squad. I watched as three women ran around playing with the children.

There are some events that are so terrifying that you can remember everything about when it happened. For me, that event is when I came out to my mom. She had called me into her room so that I could listen to her read Bible verses condemning homosexuality, which is always a fun time. The room only had one dim light on and the curtains were closed, making the room almost as gloomy as me at the time. Downstairs, I could smell my sisters baking and wished more than anything I could be there instead of where I was: sitting at the edge of the bed, staring at the pile of clothes on the floor as I tried to keep myself from thinking about what she was saying.…

You could only see half her face; her light brown hair covered the other half. She sat there crying from dawn to dusk. The busy world going throughout their day while only glimpsing her. She had an aura about her that made her invisible to most, maybe it was the way she dressed. No one knew why though, those of us who noticed her, but everyone knew she would be there the same day, every year.…

I sat down on the wilted grass. I remembered from years past long before I forfeited my life to crime. Back then I still had a few transgressions on my record, but it wasn't like my record now. Three counts of armed robbery, more robbery charges, and more charges of murder than any man should have on his conscience. My conscience constantly reminded me that it's not normal.…

My breath comes in short quick bursts. I have an ache in my side, that makes each step I take feel like there are needles digging into my skin--and still, I run on. I can hear their voices behind me. Getting closer. Gasping I look for a place to hide, and spotting a large tree, I run to it.…

Never before had Reginald Campbell felt so full in his life. He had no clue just how in the world his father, Sam, could go to a Chinese buffet and get six to seven plates of food at a time and still be hungry, whereas he could only go one to two plates with barely any room for dessert. “Check, please,” Reginald requested of the foreign waitress. She nodded and saw herself to the front of the restaurant. “How many times do I have to tell you that I can pay for this, Reginald?”…

My eyelids peeled open ever so slightly and never in my life had the view been so profound. Lying in bed, reality looked like a Hollywood movie and everything around me was clear and in sight. Without getting up, my neck snapped to the right. Outside in the distance, I could hear a young boy walking the sidewalks, rock music blasting in his ears, waking me from my slumber. Yet, it was only 4 am and I was fully awake.…

We were all crowded around the rectangular wooden table, in our musty smelling cabin, Grand Marais, Michigan. My mom- smiling her famous, beautiful white smile; my sister, Bonita-on her tiptoes attempting to be the same height as the rest of us; Taylor- my sister’s blue eyed best friend; my best friend- Ally giggling like usual, and finally me- wearing the same shirt I’d been wearing for the past few days gathered together like a group of “penguins” waiting to be fed their afternoon meal. We were all squeezing together holding mismatched cups up in the air, ready to make a toast to the night that was to come. “Here’s to our last night on Lake Superior, our last night without wifi, and our last night of uneasy, bug-filled sleep…” My mom…
