Two weeks earlier...

At first, I can only hear the bumping of tires hitting the asphalt. My vision is completely dark, and my brain can't seem to function properly enough to speak. My recollection of what had occurred in the past few hours seems to slowly be coming back in small snippets at a time. I begin to remember the kiss with Xavier, and coming home, but nothing else. My memory is blank from the moment I had stepped through the front door after it had been jimmied.

I try and turn onto my side, but I can’t seem to move. I feel like I have just been injected with adrenaline -- with my heart pumping as wildly as it is. My breathing is also labored, like I can’t get the oxygen I need.

Where am I?

"Help," I murmur. Sadly, all that actually comes out is a slight moan, as I

I can't place who the voice could belong to, even though it seems relatively familiar; like I’ve heard it before.

"Sweetheart, are you awake?"

If I could wrinkle my nose in disgust, I'd be doing it at this moment. Who keeps calling to me, and why did they call me sweetheart?

“Mel?”

Whoever they are, they apparently know my nickname as well, but I guess it’s pretty easy for anyone to take ‘Mel’ out of ‘Melanie’. This means that I probably don’t know them personally, but maybe I had been acquainted with them at some point?

My heart climbs into my throat when I hear the screeching of brakes. Oh God. Are they slowing down? Should I have answered them?

I try to keep my breathing quiet, so that I can continue to fake sleeping. Only, when I hear a car door slam, I take this chance to open up my eyes for a millisecond, to see if I know where I am. That’s when I notice the dark cloth over my eyes, preventing me to see. That’s why it had been so dark earlier on in the drive!

Cold air hits my bare ankles like an electric shock, almost causing me to jump three feet in the air.

“Melanie, it’s time to wake up. We’re

The door opened quietly, and I hoped I would leave soon without a hitch. I felt very awkward in this situation, and was glad to leave it and move down the wooden stairs. The steps I took were gentle and quiet, as though I was about to be killed should I make a noise. The silence was to my liking, but I had become to use to it. I leapt backward up over five stairs, scared out of my wits at the thought of people finding me in this place, wherever it was.…

I was not used to being clueless. Just as for many teenagers, when I got my license a new world was open to me. This was certainly a world where I had more freedom, and I had to learn how to navigate it, in more ways than one. Learning how to communicate with my parents as an adult was not easy. My new found freedom came with the catch of proving to them that I would be responsible and reliable.…

It was a hot summer morning in Dodge City Kansas, my hometown. The day my Aunt Marie, my sister Marlene, and I, go on a late, spontaneous summer vacation trip to California. The sweltering season was eventually coming to an end, and we had spend our whole vacation (and our whole lives) in this unimaginably boring place, Dodge City. It was indeed time for a change of scenery, and even if it was an extemporaneous, last minute decision, we were by far ready to experience a different terrain. Opening my eyes was the first challenge that day; typically you would have to pry open my eyes with a crowbar in order to effectively wake me up, especially this early.…
