Personal Narrative: Featherfall Hospital

Improved Essays
My entire life, I’ve only had the chance to see insignificant things of the world, the orphanage and the hills and forest surrounding it. Now, I can finally go somewhere different – the Featherfall Hospital, located in Louisiana. It’s only happened a few times, but Mother Natalie booked me an appointment at Featherfall Hospital for a check up. I leave tonight, after dinner.

Dinner was amazingly good, but I only ate a bit, before I was out the door. Amelia, my best friend, ran after me, leaving her unfinished dinner alone on the wooden table. She pulled me in for a tight hug, pinning my arms down my side. I just stood there, unable to hug her back, making the embrace an awkward one. Her fingers were oily and sticky on my skin, but that didn’t

She examined me as I described how I was feeling after the heart transplantation. She told me to press the red buttons – one located above my bed and the other in the bathroom – if I have any difficulties or struggles with anything. After instructing me with instructions that may save my life, she took my blood the way Doctor Dave had. While she was doing that, I asked her why I had to stay here for eight months and why she was so concerned with me. She hesitated before answering, “Because Gemma…during the heart transplantation, we used a horse’s heart instead of a human being’s…and it’s the first time we’ve done it” I froze and didn’t say anything and she left me alone in the silent room I had to stay in for another eight months.

I woke up to people I’ve never seen before in this hospital dressed up in transparent Ebola-like clothing. They told me to put the transparent Ebola-like clothing without explaining why and without questioning, I did as I was told. They guided me into an isolated room in the hospital on the highest floor. Doctor Dave came and spoke to me through a walkie-talkie like device and his voice echoed through the room. He explained everything to me and apologised so many times, tears forming a bathtub of water in his

My final day at the Wallace Thompson hospital was a great and memorialized day . I was able to interact and see with different procedures , and even look at some of the procedures I already seen, but with different patients so different outcomes was definitely a factor. I saw a possible gastrointestinal lymphoma , which was odd for myself considering the fact that I thought lymphoma was only considering the lymph nodes. I was also able to see an I&D of the perineal and groin area. That had to be the most disgusting yet intriguing to me.…

It was time for the routine checkups, which is mainly documenting the newborns progress on charts stored at the foot of each child’s incubator. “Parents only get to visit a couple times a day usually, rarely are they even allowed to hold their newborn children”, John explained. I think he noticed the horror on my face when he said that because he immediately responded saying “Often we let the parents go see them anyways even if it’s not really visiting hours”. That left me with some comfort for the poor families. I felt extreme compassion for how they could possibly deal with something like this.…

I had grown tired of waking up in this cold and sterile environment of the hospital NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). As every morning nurses were bustling, getting the first round of vitals on each tiny patient, updating health profiles, and getting prepared for new arrivals to the NICU. Today came as a relief escaping the bleak hospital halls for the comfort of home, no more monitors, tests, or paperwork. Bringing my precious baby home after forty-four days was long awaited; once home I would begin to understand how motherhood would forever change me.…

Unless, of course, referring to the exception of welcoming a baby into this world, however, even the arrival of babies bring some hospital rooms’ sadness and heartache.
