Obviously I grew up around my father and mother but I also grew up around my grandma Doris Farney and my grandpa Iran Farney was around when I was a baby but sadly died around when I was two. The reading The Other Family addresses an important problem in Canadian society. My eighty-three year old grandfather handed me an overwhelmingly thick book titled “Sheils Family History” and said, “Here; look through this. Maybe you’ll run into one of these people.” I suppressed a laugh, thinking of the near zero probability of me “running into” one of my distant family members as I travelled abroad for the next two weeks. However impatient, I sat quietly listening to my grandpa chirp away about our ancestors and his war stories, while I pictured myself for the next fourteen days in a completely new place.…

Dale, I told Gary, I wish dad was here, I was there to represent dad and support his brothers and sisters and Nanny. I'd learned most of my knowledge of all of them through the grape vine and I do not blame anybody but the uncontrollable circumstances. I do not want anything from them. Family Introduction Creating this genogram was a difficult task for me because my parents and their siblings hardly communicate with each other anymore. Ever since the passing of both my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, the families have simply fallen apart. Many relatives have distanced themselves from their extended families, and no longer have a desire to interact with their siblings or cousins. Sociopolitical and spiritual issues have caused some members of both families to harbor resentment against one another.…
