Personal Narrative: Farm Fest

Decent Essays
I have been involved in many different community service opportunities. One of my favorite was Farm Fest. Two separate years my school put on a field day event for special needs kids and families all over Wilmington. The event was almost completely run by my fellow high schoolers and me. I also had the opportunity to participate in several special needs basketball games, both as a fan and on the court. My varsity basketball team split up with the special needs players and played a game with the stands filled with WCA students cheering them on. I have also volunteered many times with Vigilant Hope both preparing and serving food to the homeless in the downtown Wilmington area. One Saturday I also volunteered at the Food Bank organizing food

Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

Specifically, I worked in the Outpatient Pharmacy, SurgiCenter, and Pathology/Histology Lab, assisting patients and doctors with their various needs and tasks.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

I have volunteered for several programs throughout the years. During high school, I served at my local rescue mission and assisted those who were living there. I also volunteered to work with the junior women’s team at a gymnastics center by acting as a choreographer in their yearly program. I assisted with set ups for meetings, program schedules and making students feel comfortable in the environment.…

Standing in the middle of Reliant Stadium speechless was me a 16-year-old kid whose dreams had just become a reality.
