Personal Narrative: Family Stereotypes

There is a part of me, that I feel my application would be incomplete without. Ever since I was a little kid growing up, I was always so riveted by the old family photos scattered all around my grandparent’s house. They were everywhere, the living room, the bedrooms, the walls, the house was filled. I was intrigued, as little children are of everything, as to who the people in them were and why they were missing color. I observed them closely, noticing how differently they were dressed, thinking about what it was like to live back then. My grandmother explained to me who each and everyone of them were. Day by day we looked at them, and she’d tell me stories of the people in them. I started to pick up on their names, and as I grew older I became even more interested in them, I wanted to know more. One day, my grandma told me she had boxes and boxes of photos in her attic, and I knew then and there, that I had to go through them. We pulled down box after box, there were so many. The photos were all so beautiful, my grandmother …show more content…
We exchanged info and enjoyed sharing photos and stories with each other. We had worked everything out up until we got stuck in the 1700s. Switzerland, where my family is from, is very hard to obtain records from. We tried and tried with no luck, so we decided to hire someone in switzerland to get them for us. The genealogist went to the local record facility in Bern, Switzerland and researched our family for us. He sent us emails of records and new information he found for us. We found out our family was a big family in switzerland, that traced back to the city’s origins and founders. After all of his help, we continued and we traced our family all the way back to the 10th century. I found out all sorts of things, from when my family came to America through Ellis Island, to how I was related to Queen Elizabeth II and William the Conqueror of

When one thinks of Iowa, one does not necessarily think of cultural diversity. The more and more I think about it as I have matured, it was exceedingly challenging to grow up as an Asian in my community. That is because I sometimes had trouble understanding the culture of others and my own culture at my young age. When I was younger, I found it very challenging to understand many of the things my peers and teachers were saying figuratively. For example, I had difficulty understanding jokes, so I took them literally and did not know they were joking.…

The earliest I can remember learning that my gender was different and treated differently from someone else’s was probably when I was five or six years old. I always had to wear a dress or an outfit that was always pink. I had to play with dolls and only do things that little girls would normally do and I of course noticed that boys didn’t have to do anything similar to me so I realized that I was being treated differently simply because I was a girl.…

For me I felt taken back by this because growing up this was something I never had to worry about. Another way to see the socioeconomic difference was when it came to certain children having toys or clothing other kids didn’t have. Some of these children would make comments about how they couldn’t afford to have a phone or even a video game like the other kids at the club. Growing up I never felt this way, I always had everything I could have asked for and was constantly being spoiled by my family. The area where I volunteer had groups ranging from third to fifth grade and there were much more boys than girls.…

Growing up in a family that did not communicate that much, I was not very close with my mother of father. My mom and I did tend to talk more but not about personal things in our life. Me and my dad however always fought. I have a few good memories with him (he loved teaching me how to make home made biscuits.) which I always enjoyed on those rare occasions he was in a good mood. But, 90% of the time we were fighting.…

To the ones who believe asking, “What are you?” is a valid conversation starter, I am multiracial and proud, but to simplify my ethnicities to others when asked, I identify myself as Asian. I was stereotyped because of how we are perceived in media and society. I spent years cowering in my own skin because others made me believe I was not Asian because of the size of my eyes, the color of my hair, and my personal interests. I was ashamed of what I looked like since I was convinced it embodied who I am as a person.…

Exasperation and defeat played big parts in my research journey in the Genealogy J-Term. Throughout my persistent irritation from not finding any new information, I constantly felt as if I were going to give up and almost had regret choosing this class. All of this frustration I possessed evaporated when I finally started interrogating my family members and confirming the few things I knew about my ancestry. After days of discovering pages of information and scavenging the internet for censuses, I developed a vivid veneration for the people that came before me.…

Throughout my life I have had mixed experiences when it comes to race relations in America. Most of my experiences when it comes to race have been good. However, I have also had some negative experiences associated with race. One negative experience-e I have had as a result of my race happened when I came to college. I had been working at a Target back home and decided to transfer to a store closer to Cabrini.…

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, we're all accustomed to a certain standard, or stereotype that needs to be played. Whether it's being captain of the cheerleading team or the smartest kid in your class, it's one way or another that's there's going to be someone who's supposed to follow by these stereotypes or standards just for the sole fact that that's them. Unfortunately for me, it couldn't get any worse, since being an African American female who unfortunately does not fit your typical, "angry black woman." Yes, that "angry black woman", bitter, closed-off, unarticulated, with serious father issues.…

Another tragic memory that pumped some sense into my head about racial identity and ethnic disparities; was when my elder brother was arrested on the basis of being black. My brother was wrongfully arrested because a Caucasian officer expressed that he saw him rob someone. Upon arrival at the scene trying to understand what happened, that officer expressed in his words that “ nigger you know you robbed that store”. I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me because, I have always heard about situations like this. The officer made more remarks such as, “you niggers are always stealing”, “you niggers will always be shit”, and you are going to pay for this crime even if you did not do it.…

One summer day years ago, I took a friends son with us to Busch Gardens, he was the same age as my 10 year old son and they we friends. As we drove up to park we were talking about biracial families and how some kids don’t look like their parents of a different color. Well, Jose was the boy’s name and I said to him, “Well, just because you have a different dad than your brother…

Myths of the American Family A common myth of the American family is that the father is the bread winner and the mother is the homemaker, but in my family, that is not entirely the case at all. My mother owns an online business, so even though she is home all day, she is still bringing in an income that is very similar to my fathers. There are other myths that my family certainly does portray in some way, but this myth is not one of them. Throughout this essay I will give specific examples of how exactly my family does not follow the myth of “A breadwinner father and a Home maker mother.”…

I grew up in a small town where people consider daughters should help support the family and get married at young age while sons should go to schools as a norm. my mom is a product of this biased tradition: she started working after being removed from school at third grade and was arranged to marry my dad by her parents at the age of 16. Due to financial struggles, my dad wanted me to drop out of school early and start working but my mom absolutely opposed to it. To keep me in school and food on the table, my mom had to work two jobs. She left for work at early morning and came home at late evening, so I only saw her on the weekend.…

Growing up in a low income family generated countless struggles financially for me. Money has usually been an easy absence in my family's life, which seriously impacted our living conditions. For the most part my parents always showed support, there was never an odd silence despite the tough moments. When my parents announced they were getting laid off from their jobs, I felt an instant desperation to step up as a young adult, so I could help them pay bills.…
