Personal Narrative: Eyebrow Stylism

Improved Essays
Eyebrow Stylist I believe in doing my mother’s eyebrows so she doesn’t have to rely on a stranger to do them. No matter if I’m busy or tired, I will always help her when she asks. I do this for her, not only because her vision is failing, or that her hand is not as steady as it use to be, but because she has taught me how to do mine. She didn’t hire someone to take care of me as I grew up, so why shouldn’t I do the same for her? Even though I would do anything for my mother, I know quite a few people who wouldn’t. I once knew someone who yelled at their mom for getting them the wrong $90 phone case. This person then went on to call their mom ignorant, even after she apologized profusely. I was amazed at how hard their mom was trying to gain her daughter/son’s approval, and how hurt …show more content…
My mom had told me that raising my brother without her mother’s guidance was very difficult. She didn’t have anyone to tell her how to discipline her child, or what to do when she’s woken up at 3am to a piercing cry because he’s too cold. Because she didn’t want me to go through this with everyday tasks, I see how hard she tries to make sure she’s there for me and my brother to provide guidance. Whether the guidance was asked for or not, I make sure to let her know that I acknowledged her advice. The last thing I want her to think is that I don’t care about her opinions. Whether it’s helping read instructions, holding open a door, or doing her eyebrows, I always help my mother. It took a little bit of time, but I realized that I won’t always have her around, and as she grows old, it’s my job to return the favor and take care of her. To me, nothing is more heartbreaking than seeing an old woman’s/man’s face as their children drop them off at a nursing home. I believe that it is our duty to take care of our parents when they’re too old to take care of themselves. It’s the least we can

As we age we start to worry about our family, specifically our parents. Who is going to take care of them, are they going to be able to stay at home, how much assistance are they going to need, is my sibling going to step in and help or am I going to be caring for them by myself? All of these questions can be overwhelming and cannot be answered until they actually happen. As we saw in Angels Preach a lot goes into caregiving and decision making for what is best for are loved one. I thought this movie did a really good job about dismissing the stereotypes to caregiving, but it also show how Alzheimer’s can affect everyone in the family, and how moving elders with Alzheimer’s out of their homes is not the best option.…

Marla Gibbs identified the following: “There are no accidents; we 're all teachers- if we 're willing to pay attention to the lessons we learn, trust our positive instincts and not be afraid to take risks or wait for some miracle to come knocking at our door” (as cited in Freedom Resources Center for Independent Living [Freedom RC], 2015). This quotes resonates with the elder project because I learned more about my neighbor Jeanne. Family History and Support System Jeanne is an 81 female, who is the only child of Herbert and Clara. As a biracial child in America, I never quite fit in. Growing up in Mendocino,California with exactly one “black” girl (myself) in the entire school, I was the go to for questions about rap music, dance moves and slang. I felt as if I was a representative for the entire African American race even though I am just as white as I am black. Once I left the sheltered bubble of Mendocino, I saw more people that didn’t look like me which left me in an identity crisis, everyone had a community except for me. My African family praised my fairness, and adored my curly tresses, but my white family didn't understand what to do with it.…

Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a department and grocery stores and see all types of merchandise for their hair, but not many know what the products are right for them. They see products that promise to rejuvenate dry, damaged hair; volumize limp, flat hair; straighten curly hair, and regenerate thinning hair. With my hair being a kinky curl, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and apply them at home. She would give me the same answer every time, “This should only be performed by a professional if you do not want to ruin your hair.”…

I grew up in a pretty isolated area, away from bright city lights, and also away from kids my age to socialize with. But, I wasn't completely alone. I had a doll that was practically the same size of me at age four, she had long golden hair, blue eyes with curly eyelashes to complement them, and wore a pastel pink dress. We would often dance in the kitchen close to bedtime, listening to the radio, while my mom would sometimes watch for entertainment while she was fixing dinner. The doll would always wear the pastel pink dress, while I would wear one of my multiple pairs of pajamas that were in different colors and have my hair up in a low ponytail.…
