Personal Narrative: My Winter Night In Iowa

Superior Essays
It was just another cold January winter night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On the fifth of January, I was introduced to the world, I was born on the coldest day of 1999, at a frigid -30 degrees. I’ve been blessed with the two greatest parents in the world that have been married for 19 years. My family was completed on May 24, 2001, when my little brother Mason was born. Mason and I were not given our names for any specific reason our parents just liked the names. James was my middle name that my parents had given me which came from my grandfather. Stahle is a german name, and in Germany, it was pronounced “Steal”, my ancestors came to the United States in the early 1800’s.

I participated in cross country in the fall, and golf and baseball in the spring. High school sports are a lot more fun because you get to practice and compete with other people from different grades in your school. Freshman year was one of my favorite years of high school because the senior class was super nice and treated everyone with respect, and also all the teachers we there to help you and if you needed help they would stay after school and help you. Art was not my greatest skills and as a freshman I took drawing. The whole art class was supposed to draw something and show it to the class. When it was my turn to share I went up and when doing so I accidently bumped the art teacher 's table with his coffee on it and it spilled all over a seniors drawing. I had never been so scared in my life and I couldn’t wait to be done with freshman year so I wouldn’t have to see the seniors at school again. We had just gotten out for summer my freshman year and I realized that when you are in sports your summer goes away very fast with baseball and cross country practice. Freshman year summer was wrapping up and I was about to enter the most difficult grade in the whole high school. I was going to be a sophomore with my schedule full of hard classes. I was not ready for what had hit me. I remember the first grade I got sophomore year was a C, which I rarely ever got. I had to stay about every day after school to retake tests and relearn the material. This made me feel down on myself, but I changed everything once I changed my study skills which made school so much easier and my grade started to go up. Sophomore year was full of memories with my friends, from the time we had to go to a varsity baseball practice and had to run 3 miles, to when we got in trouble for coming back from lunch 30 minutes

It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

College Essay Being raised in Milwaukee Wisconsin as a poor family was not only tough for me, but tough on my parents knowing how hard it was to raise a child with no money and a 9-5 Job. Living in Wisconsin as an 8 year old boy was tough, not only was it freezing cold everyday, but all the other children would make fun of me because I didn’t have the highest fashion of clothing or the newest shoes. At the time I would come home upset everyday because I knew I couldn’t dress as nice or be as good as any of the other kids, and being at home wasn’t any better. I would wake up in the middle of the night every night, there were so many shots the neighbor looked at the calendar because they thought it was Fourth of July. My family lived in a small apartment complex right outside of town, the area was known for crime, murders, and excessive break ins.…

My second year of high school was difficult for me as I had taken on my first AP class and I had learned that my aunt had been diagnosed with cancer. That year took a toll on my grades, overall GPA, and class ranking, which all went down because I focused all of my attention solely on my one AP class. I would also be constantly worried about my aunt and I would catch myself drifting off just thinking about her, hoping that she was okay. Junior year, I was determined to obtain a higher GPA and a better class ranking, and as a result I would skip out on family events when I had homework to do…
