Personal Narrative I was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey and raised in East Brunswick, New Jersey. My parents were born and raised in Romania and came to America with my sister in 1997 after winning the Visa lottery. My mother works at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey which is in a partnership with Rutgers University. As a result of this, I am able to get my tuition reimbursed and go to school for a significantly lower cost. A public issue today is immigration, and without my parents immigrating here about twenty years ago I would not have the opportunity to attend Rutgers University.
As a result of my culture and personal issues, I know that attending college costs a person a lot of money, and attending Rutgers with free tuition would be the best for me in the future because I would have less debt than if I were to attend a different university. Without social capital, I most likely would have still gone to Rutgers because family is very valued in my culture and I am very close to home while attending Rutgers University. However, because of my mother, going to Rutgers became a package deal; close to home and affordable. Also as a result of my culture and after seeing all of my cousins go to college, I value my education and try hard by studying for my classes about eight hours a week. To me, this is a good amount of time spent studying because my parents have always told me to spend at least an hour a day studying and reviewing in order to do well. They have always stressed to me to do well in school because it was important for my future. As a result of seeing all of my family members have college degrees and full-time jobs, I know that education is greatly valued and necessary to be successful in
