As a three sport athlete, I am a pretty competitive person. I let nothing get in my way. Whenever I fall down, literally or figuratively, I always brush off the pain and get back up with a smile on my face. I always strive to get better at everything I do and no matter what I always give everything my all. I want to be the best person I can be. My entire high school career had gone exactly how I had planned and hoped for it to go, until winter of my junior year.
We were almost halfway through our basketball season when I had to face a pretty big hurdle. We were having an amazing season and were projected to make it really far in tournaments. Then, one game I got undercut by one of my opponents and snapped my ankle. I went to the doctor the following day and had to take an MRI. It turns out I had fractured my ankle, completely tore three of my ligaments, partially tore two other ligaments, and had a bad

I wouldn’t take any of it back because going through this tough time, it taught me how to look on the bright side of everything. I am such a positive person now because of this. I don’t take my health for granted anymore like how I used to. I wake up every morning thanking God for my health and the opportunities He has given me. I now know how to bounce back from difficult times and work hard for what I want to achieve. I believe there will be times in college where I will be stretched; however, I look forward to this because I know it will help me grow as a person. I know I will be stretched by stepping out of my comfort zone. I am a pretty quiet person, so I will have to become more involved and step out on my own to meet new people. I know there will also be times when I won’t understand things like class material. In this case, I will ask questions and study hard to become a master in this field. In America, McDonald's has become the face of obesity, unhealthy living, and evil; however, to my family, McDonald's has not been a comfort food, but a comforting food. When we were alone and hungry in a foreign land, McDonald's was our faithful friend. When we landed at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai, China, we were exhausted from the tedious 14-hour flight; all my family wanted was sustenance and sleep. Arriving to our new, empty apartment, we sadly found neither. All eight of us loaded back into the little, grey Buick minivan so we could go shopping at the Carrefour (a four story French version of Walmart) just two miles away.…

Injuring my ankle was the first time I had to leave a sports game due to injury. For some athletes this might not seem very significant, but up until that point I played with the mindset that since I had not been hurt up until that point I could do whatever it took to win and not be injured. After having to see with my own eyes that my body has limits, the way I played sports was altered sub consciously. Our school trainer told me I would be out of my winter sport for around a week, which was a long time for me, but I was just thankful I could still use my knees without needing surgery. That injury haunts my mind almost every…

In the warm chaos of the delivery room at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, I was alone for five minutes. I basked in the limelight, but was quickly interrupted by two more loud, scrawny babies. My spotlight was not shared for long though; a week after my birth, I was taken home. I was nameless (going by Charlie Brown and Wrinkle Head), content to be the center of my parents’ attention, and alone for one last time. Ten days later, Matthew and Josephine were brought home and stole my spotlight once again.…

My right directional blinking, foot glued to the brake, and front end of my car smashed into an SUV ahead. I was sitting in the middle of the highway completely stopped, cars cruising by with an acknowledgement. All I could think was “did that really just happen?” There was a ringing in my ears that cut off all sound except the roar of cars driving over crushed and crumbling metal. The other driver and I pulled off to the side of the highway, and at this point I was absolutely terrified.…
