Narrative Essay What do you consider a challenge? Maybe hitting more home runs, running faster, beating your time running barrels, or maybe training an animal. I wanted to train a donkey. Training the donkey would be a challenge, but I had always wanted to make a career of training horses and other equines. This experience taught me to be patient and not give up. Christmas was just around the corner when I was given my donkey. I named him Solomon. He was given to me by my grandmother who had cancer ,and wanted me to have something from her. I had asked for a young donkey so I could make a bigger impression on him. It is hard to believe something so young could be so strong, stubborn, and wild. I hoped he was willing to learn because training him would be the hardest thing I have done. Everyone knows that donkeys are stubborn and strong. Solomon was wild too, he jumped out of his corral into the main pasture. It was rainy and muddy and it took us two days to catch him. After we caught him we put him in a stall for a few days and that is when things started running …show more content…
I tried to gain Solomon's trust by giving him treats, and sitting with him in the pasture. When it was time to eat ,I hand feed him so he would come to humans for food. Next was halter breaking, which was done by putting his rope and halter on him and rewarding him with peppermints when he followed me. Sometimes we had to use the horses to help train him. Like when he was afraid to walk through the gate of the pastures we used the horses of pull and herd him through. The first time I rode him he was the around a year and a half old. He barely walked, but did not buck or kick. After that the more I rode him the better he did, now I can ride him on our property or along the road. I have not rode him at an arena yet or try to load him in a trailer that will be another
