Do you remember being scared, nervous, and excited to start your freshman year of high school? Imagine coming from an abusive household and moving to a place where you don’t know anyone. Starting high school was rough for Liz. She had all of these emotions alongside the feeling of guilt that made her feel empty. Although she was having fun on the surface, her mind would remind her of what was waiting for her once she got home -a phone call. This happened on a daily basis where her mother would scream at her while her father was away at work. These calls were never pleasant, her mother would blame Liz for all her misfortunes that included her failed marriage and her family’s homelessness. Liz became very depressed, anxious, and suicidal. She didn’t know what else to do, she felt hopeless. At school, she’d keep to herself. She would wear jackets to cover up the slits on her wrists that stung while they healed. She thought about the day June 4th, 2014 a lot and how nice the weather would be with the sun beaming down her face, the clear blue sky, and looking out towards where the ocean meets the horizon. She decided that June 4th was going to be her last day. In school, Liz was a good student, she did her work and helped those in need. The class she was really good at was World History. In that class, she sat next to a Junior named, Kaela Avanilla. Kaela was one of the best volleyball players at her school, popular, and sucked at getting her work done. She was very beautiful, 5’8”, lanky, with long, brown hair and an amazing smile. She exuded a positive energy that made everyone around her smile. One day, after class, Kaela pulled Liz to the side and asked her what those marks on her arm were from. Liz lied and told Kaela she fell. Kaela was skeptical and proceeded to tell her that her father used to harm himself and then left class. Liz didn’t know what to think. She was scared about what Kaela was going to do, if anything at all. She just hoped that they would just keep it a secret between
