I nervously paced in front of the PowerPoint, debating whether or not I should tell my mother how I wanted to change and how I wanted to be me. I could already hear her saying how foolish I would look and how I would be bullied for being different. I had always been reserved; I kept to the rules and never dreamed of leaving my comfort zone. I was terrified of being judged, and worried about what people would think, but I really wanted to be cheerful and loud in everything I could dream of. I was required to wear a school uniform every day until I was 15. I was not allowed to wear nail polish, statement jewelry, handbags, or even sandals because of the strict uniform guidelines. Because I was never given the freedom to create looks of my own, I had no sense of personal style or even self-identity when I reached high school. So I began turning to fashion magazines for style inspiration. Every day after school, I flipped through countless issues of Teen Vogue, Nylon, Elle, and Glamour, carefully examining the well-crafted ensembles and thoughtful articles that graced their pages.…

Much like this opening sentence, people judge you within the first half a second of laying eyes on you, as a designer I all I want to achieve is to make them take a little longer. I am so excited with the prospect of studding fashion at University as I know that it will an experience that will encourage my ambition to push myself and the boundaries of fashion by looking to the future. The moment I was introduced into my first textiles lesson and got my hands on the sewing machine I honestly felt I had found something incomparable to any other part of my life, something I was good at, something that inspired me and finally something that could answer the question “so, what do you want to be when you grow up?”. From that point I have never looked…
