In the warm chaos of the delivery room at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, I was alone for five minutes. I basked in the limelight, but was quickly interrupted by two more loud, scrawny babies. My spotlight was not shared for long though; a week after my birth, I was taken home. I was nameless (going by Charlie Brown and Wrinkle Head), content to be the center of my parents’ attention, and alone for one last time. Ten days later, Matthew and Josephine were brought home and stole my spotlight once again. These trespassers turned out to be my brother and sister, and my life as a triplet began. As we grew, we became an inseparable unit. We melted down on airplanes, shrieked in department stores, and helped each other sneak out of our shared crib to prolong play and escape bedtime, typically leaving me, the biggest, alone and stranded. (My mother’s favorite …show more content…
I wanted people to know I wasn’t just a piece of a three-part special. I wanted to be known by my own name. My siblings and I were all motivated to discover a passion in our lives and pursue it, but I found it especially hard to do so when constantly being associated with my brother and sister. Curious strangers often asked how I differ from my siblings, attempting to find superficial variations that distinguish me from them, but it is incredibly frustrating trying to differentiate myself from Matthew and Josephine based purely on physicalities. We have unique ambitions, fears, strengths, and weaknesses; we are no more alike than any other set of siblings in the world. To cram the three of us in the same box is to deny our individuality. I want to tell people that I love to learn, have a passion for baseball, and want to pursue a career in business. Nonetheless, people never seem to be interested in those things. They are more intrigued by the dynamic of me being a triplet than they are personally interested in

One of the greatest factors that contribute to twins’ relationships is the appearance of both twins that appear as mirrored faces or almost close to identical faces that make a distinct separation between normal siblings and twins. In the book, Entwined Lives, author Nancy Segal demonstrates that twins that are identical or symmetrical-appearing have a close relationship because of the clear similarities in the physique and face of twins that lead misunderstandings in which in “Twins and families have long known that some twins find it difficult to identify themselves in snapshots, even if they have not known why” (Segal 25). Because many pairs of twins are born identical or with similar appearances, twins gain a close relationship to the point…

Many people, at some point in their lives, wish for a twin brother or sister, but they don’t truly understand the difficulties and bond of having a life-long partner. Many twins have trouble identifying themselves as a single person. People they know and love compare the twins, often with drastic results; however, through it all, twins usually have such a close bond that it lasts through the ages. For singletons, it can be challenging to recognize the tight bond twins have, the struggle of comparison, and grasp a twin’s loose hold on his or her identity. Consequently, a lot of twins struggle to establish themselves; however, a twin’s perspective of identity is completely different from that of singletons.…

It became frustrating at times because we were always placed in the same school and programs up until high school. At times people wouldn’t even get the chance to remember our names and instead call us “Twins”. My sister, Tiara and I always hated it. It’s frustrating knowing that no matter what I do; I would never be seen as myself rather than “the twins”. In school we would try to do different hairstyles, wear different things even if we both liked it, just so people wouldn’t think we were the same.…

There is something that makes me stand out from others: my younger twin sister, Sophia, and I are fraternal twins. Although we’re fraternal twins who technically don't look alike, my sister and I share almost identical facial and body features, to the point where people wouldn’t be able to recognize who is who from the back. This is why there is always confusion between our friends about if the person they are greeting is the right twin, (and most of the time it is not). Most people would get angry if someone mistook them for another person. This, however, is not the case for me.…

It seems like every day that someone comes up to my brother and I asking,” Are you twins? What is it like to be a twin?” Aside from our near identical appearance, we always seem to top it off by answering at the same time, making people think,”wow they really are the same.” When seventh grade came this all stopped. Having been separated in every class and in after school activities, I found my own world away from my brother.…

My second chance at life had finally arrived, and I could not have been more nervous to start altering my social life. As I got into middle school, I remember ditching my twin to join a variety of four clubs, become a part of the Student Council, and the cheer, basketball, and volleyball team. At first I didn’t think I could manage doing all of this so rapidly, but I soon realized that I was born to be around people and not hidden behind my twin. After joining these extracurriculars, the quantity of friends I had expanded immensely day after day.…
