One of my earliest childhood recollections is from when I was 3 years old. My friend Cole and I were having an argument over the color of a Power Ranger. I was adamant that the plastic action figure was red. Cole insisted it was green. I knew I was right. After all, how could it not be red? My mom stepped in and corrected me. “Jake, that Power Ranger is green – I guess we need to work more on your colors.” I was angry. I knew my colors, at least I thought I did, but both my best friend and my mother were telling me I was wrong.

Two years later, I was sitting in a cold, sterile office. A doctor held a pile of cards, each with a printed circle on it composed of a thousand dots. He asked me, “Jake, what number do you see?” But, I didn’t see a number, just a multitude of dots. He asked again, “Jake, what number do you see?” My heart started beating faster and I began to worry I was going to fail, so I decided to start making up answers. This time when he asked, I responded, “Umm - 72.” He showed me another card and asked, “What number do you see this time?” I responded, “23.”
