My ropes course experience, was very different than my peers. I came into the unit with the biggest fear of heights. Even climbing to the top of a latter gives me extreme anxiety to the point where I feel light headed and short of breath. Also when everyone is watching me go up, that really triggers my anxiety. My goals for this unit may seem small to some, but very challenging to myself. There is one adventure quote that really stuck with me, ”Too often we are scared. Scared of what people might think if we tried. We let our fears stand in the way of our hopes. We say no when we want to say yes. We sit quietly when we want to scream. And we shout with the others when we should keep our mouths shut. Why? After all, we do only go around once. …show more content…
So stop.” (Author unknown). I can relate to this quote because there were moments when I found the inner strength to put my anxiety aside, and climb the rope/tree. One thing about my experience that is a little different quote is that I didn’t follow the others. Even though I wanted to climb with all my peers and be able to do what they can do, I couldn’t. Although, like the quote says,”We sit quietly when we want to scream,” that is what I did. Everyone was shouting at me to climb it and stop being a baby, but it’s not that simple. When you have anxiety it takes over your whole body and makes it very difficult to do those things. So I could not just,”climb the rope” or “stop being a baby.” One thing that this quote does not mention is how people can work together as a team. A big part of what I was involved in was the balay team. Everyday, I made it my goal to participate in every job. So it wasn’t like I was goofing off when I wasn’t climbing. I was always involved. For the times I did climb, I risked a lot of things, like the quote states. I was risking my fear of falling, embarrassment, and heights. All at once. So I grabbed the ladder and the first time I only went to

I was nearing the top of the cliff, take a step up the ladder, move the two carabiner clips, repeat, repeat, repeat. My hands were shaking and I was sweating way too profusely for a rather cool 64° afternoon despite climbing the cliff. “You sure this is safe?” I asked my guide knowing the rungs were drilled a foot or more into solid stone. He said that I was safe about ten times already and I believed him, so why was I still so scared?…

This past summer, I had the opportunity to go zip lining for the very first time. I, as with anyone with a slight concern for dangerous heights, wasn’t too keen on dangling hundreds of feet off the ground, and was extremely anxious. Just before I was about to step off the edge, I remember my friends encouraging me, “Don’t worry, Marina! It’s as easy as riding a bike.” In some cases, riding a bicycle isn’t as easy as you would expect.…

After some thinking, I came to a decision because I thought that if I did it, I would no longer have a fear of heights and I shouldn’t be afraid of anything. Since I had a fear of heights, I was hesitant of going zip-lining.…

If people are constantly living in fear, whether that is the fear of failure, danger, humiliation, or the unknown, they are limiting themselves and the experiences they could have in their lifetime. Do you think Lynne Cox would hold the abundance of records she has if she was too frightened of swimming in freezing cold water? Do you think Enn would have gotten the confidence to talk to girls if he had never put himself in a different situation? People should care about confronting their fears and answering the call of adventure, because without doing so they will “live” in constant fear and never actually live the best life they…
