Personal Narrative Essay: Winning The Lottery

Improved Essays
The average state lottery has a jackpot odds of about 100,000,000 to 1 of winning, and I have always dreamed of being that one lucky winner. In life we all will experience some sort of event that will forever change us as a person and makes us see life differently. For me, winning the lottery is that life changing event I have always day dreamed happening to me. I believe a lot of good can come from such a change, however, with a change of this magnitude will also come some bad. Unfortunately, most people who will win the lottery will just use the money for their own selfish reasons, and not to help someone in need. I believe if you win you should use it as an opportunity to change the world. If I were to ever win the lottery I would make significant …show more content…
You will always need someplace to call your home, of course with millions of dollars to spare that little piece of home would look similar to a mansion and not so much the two bedroom apartment I shared with my dad. With my new luxury home, I would want a new car to match my new lifestyle. Therefor, I would get rid of my old Hyundai Sonata I currently drive, and buy a brand new sports car. Of course, someone would have to show me how to drive my new fast car. My current vehicle is a four-cylinder and driving a sports car would be a drastic change in how hard you need to push the pedal. I know it may sound like all I want are luxury items, but that is not all true. You see I begged my dad for many years to let me have a puppy at our apartment. However, my dad told me if I wanted a pet I would have to move out and get my own place first. The first thing I would buy before anything after I would the lottery would be a pug puppy. Anyone that knows me personally knows that I have a true obsession with pugs and absolutely adore everything about them. No purchase would bring as much satisfaction as a new baby pug would bring …show more content…
My first step in helping other people would be to help people in my family. I would never want to see my family struggle financially if I have the opportunity to change that issue. My father is currently a self-employed business owner of a small machine shop in our local area, and that is how he 's a made a living through the years. Every now and then my sisters and I will ask him why he does not go out and find a job that makes more money. He simply answers he does it because it is what he loves to do. I would love to have the money to invest in his business to help it grow like he has always wanted it to. That way he will be able to make more money while also doing what he loves to do. The next issue I would want to handle would be to donate money for cancer research. Within the last six months I lost both of my grandmothers due to cancer. I remember how heartbreaking it was watching them suffer through chemotherapy and trying various treatment options just for it all to fail in the end. Watching someone you love and care about suffer is something I would not wish onto anyone. Therefor, if I won the lottery I would want to donate money to cancer research so they can find a cure. This way, no family has to go through what me and my family went through.
Even though I have a better chance of being struck by lightning than I do winning the lottery, I still have hope

Once the lottery players becomes a lottery winner, they will supposedly continue to play the lottery based on Durkheim’s theory. The winners will also not feel as content in life and will also be obsessed with buying things they would not have considered buying as a lottery player. Based on Durkheim’s theory, it is expected to already see differences in the wants of lottery players from low-economic and middle-class backgrounds. Only because the middle-class already has more money to start with, so they strive for more and can be less content in life than low-economic…

The Lottery symbolizes what the villagers morally accepted and what they did not question to be wrong with how this lottery was being run. The title is also ironic because we find out later in the story that the prize isn't what the prize is in today's society, but it would be a punishment. We find out that the prize isn't an award someone would want when Mrs. Hutchinson…

The power of fiction to transport a reader into a different time, place or quest carries the human imagination like a magic carpet to worlds unknown. “Human beings love stories. We put them everywhere-not only in books, films, and plays, but also in songs, news articles, cartoons, and video games.” (Kennedy, Gioia 2013) Not only is fiction used to expand the imagination, but fiction can also be used as a vehicle of expression for the human heart to communicate emotions, principles and problems that we often encounter as created beings.…

So before I left to go on this trip, I entered the lottery for this miniature junior high called dutcher that is difficult to get into. We had entered before we had officially decided to go on the cross country trip, so I wasn't going to be able to go to dutcher. The odd thing was; I didn't show up to the drawing because I just figured that I wouldn't make it in, but the next day when I went to elementary school a friend of mine told me that I had made it in. This had surprised me, because normally I don't make it into these things. My elementary was a lottery school, and I only got into it because my brother got pulled.…

“Lottery” Rough Draft When one thinks of a lottery they most likely think that “winning” is a good thing. You might receive money, a car, or other kinds of valuables. This is definitely not the case for the winner in the “Lottery.” The winner is more like the loser and is unfortunately stoned to death by her fellow friends and family members. Shirley Jackson’s shocking story, “The Lottery,” explores the theme of man’s inhumanity to man through the use of irony and foreshadowing.…

Bryan Francoeur mentions that, “ What ‘The Lottery’ is really about are the broader issues of not blindly obeying authority and not doing things just because they are tradition. The people of the town don 't even stop to think about why they are killing someone, and we never find out through the course of the story” ( 3 ). Diana summarizes: “ The underlying message of Jackson 's story is just as relevant today as ever” ( 1…

Some believe that people can be altruistic based on a moral code. Others tend to be more realistic and understand that people are prone to lies and will have a hidden agenda, and fail to share their meaning. Others believe you can be truthful and also have a hidden agenda. While most people want to be truly good, it is obvious that this is not the case.…

For my short essay, I have chosen to write about The Lottery. The lottery to me provides epic amount of material to write about in this essay. In this essay, I would like to contribute my take on what I believe what Shirley Jackson meant by her characterization of character presented in this short story as well as try my hand at trying to decipher the message she was attempting to get across from her conflict and ending. First, Shirley Jackson describe boys playing with stones on a nice summer day while the girls look on, fathers discuss “men” things, and mothers discussing “women” things while reuniting with their husbands.…
