My mother can recall conducting nuclear attack drills in her school in Chicago. Apparently the students were to get under their desks and not look out the windows. Being a prior Air Force nuclear weapons specialist, I can assure you that these drills were mainly something to do before you and everyone around you perished. It would have happened one of 2 ways; either instantly, in a flash of flame and debris, or slowly and painfully due to radiation poisoning. President Regan knew this better than I do and the grit he showed in not only confronting the leaders of the Soviet Union, but also the liberals who were ready to give up under the fear of destruction. It almost sickens me to think that some people would rather not stand up for what they themselves believe. They would rather bend the proverbial knee and accept tyrant’s demands. This speech is almost always posted on facebook around Veterans Day. Not being a Regan baby, these posts were the first time I was exposed to the speech. It elicited an emotions response that went to my core. It spoke boldly to our enemies and our allies alike. Making sure that both knew where we stood as far as our idealisms. Being president, no one would question whether he had the right to say these words, that he was also a veteran was icing on the cake.
