Personal Narrative Essay: Waking Up In High School

Decent Essays
A loud alarm wakes me up from my wonderful slumber. I get ready for school very slowly, for I am incredibly tired of waking up so early. When I walk outside to get in my car, it is still as dark as night. Why would districts make school start so early? Even pushing it back one measly hour would make a difference to all of the teenagers in high school. While I am driving to school, I think about how fantastic it felt to have the freedom of driving anywhere I’d like, as long as my parents approved. I pull up in my designated parking spot and trudge inside the lowly-lit school along with the other zombie-like teenagers.
Although there are many tough parts about being a teenager, two of the hardest things are waking up incredibly early before sunrise and doing the piles of homework that all of your individual teachers assigned. Having great time management skills, the homework does not bother me as much as the 5:30 wake up does. When my siblings start attending high school, I will advise them to work on their time management skills. This would include doing all of the homework the day they are given it, no matter when the due date is. This will open up time to do other things with friends

One of them is the freedom of driving. Driving for a teenager is like a bird flying for the first time. Being able to go anywhere — with your parents’ permission—is the first true feeling you get of leaving home. You no longer have to rely on your parents to drive you to school, your friend’s house, or to that one beach party you wanted to go to over the summer that your parents did not want to drive you to. My advice to my younger siblings would be to always make sure to tell your parents where you are going. With all that freedom, one can forget to tell a parent where they are going, and that could quite possibly mean the revoking of your car

In my case, my middle school graduation was a quick transition for another reason. By this point my grandfather had battled off colon cancer, 3 heart attacks, and 2 open heart surgeries. At age 74 he was not a candidate for a heart transplant but he was able to get a defibrillator.…

Does your teenager wake feeling drowsy and powerless—repeatedly clicking the snooze button, and before you know it, they’re late for school? You’re not alone. Roughly 40% of American high schools are opening their doors before 8 a.m. People are debating whether starting school earlier is a good idea, or if it could interfere with other after-school clubs and sports. The benefits of schools starting later in the morning far outweighs these concerns, as it allows teens the necessary resting time which their developing bodies require, it makes life easier for parents in dealing with grumpy, sleep-deprived children, and it provides many notable health and academic benefits. The first supporting reason for pushing back the starting school bell is that it gives students more sleeping time, which they absolutely need to function at full capacity in school.…

The minimum driving age should not be raised from 16 to 18. In my opinion, teens already have a problem getting where they need to go considering their transportation is usually their parents. By the time they come home from work they are too exhausted to drive anywhere else. Starting out early than waiting until one becomes a legal adult to drive gives a teenager an opportunity to exercise responsibility and to have some independence. Just because teens are prone to do reckless, irresponsible things does not necessarily mean they will get into accidents because they are younger.…
