The Unfairness of Seniority
“Freshman duties! Grab a bag and take it to the field.” It was the first day of soccer practice and I was already annoyed with the upperclassmen. This was the exact opposite of how I intended practice would be. During my entire childhood, I was told that sports provide you with the most important and exciting memories in your life. However, this practice was making me feel as if I was lied too because this practice was the worst. As I thought deeply about it, I decided to ignore the unfair treatment so I grabbed a ball bag and started walking towards the field. I had a small feeling that one of the freshmen would stand up for us, but nothing was said, the situation was totally ignored. Finally, we arrived in the

My brothers came downstairs from their bedrooms so we could eat dinner as a family. After everyone was sitting down, my brother Karscen asked me how practice was. I replied with, “It was okay. There was some drama but other than that it was good.” Both of my parents looked at me with a very surprising look on their faces. When my parents were in school, there was no drama in sports. Everyone got along and nobody complained, so to them this was a surprise. My mom asked me in a strong tone, “Drama on the first day of practice? What happened?” I then explained the situation to my parents and brothers and they were all surprised. Furthermore, my dad told me that most things in life don't work the way that they should, things are just unfair. However, they told me that if something happened like that again then I should stick up for my …show more content…
Three days later, we had a scrimmage against Laingsburg. Coach Thelen scheduled this scrimmage so he could get a good idea of everyone's skill level. At first, the scrimmage was going good, everyone was getting along and nobody was complaining. However, at about halfway through the scrimmage, we began to fall apart. The sophomores, juniors, and seniors decided not to include the freshmen. This became a huge issue. At this point I was in the game, I was wide open and screamed for the ball. However, Emily decided to pass it to another senior who was nowhere near open. Additionally, the upperclassmen continued to only pass with one another for the rest of the scrimmage. I along with every other freshman felt invisible. What was the point of playing on the team if we weren't even involved? Finally, the second half was over and it was time to leave. Before we could hop into our cars and leave, Coach Thelen talked to the team. He discussed certain things that we would have to work on before our first official game. However, he never mentioned anything about the upperclassmen purposely not including the freshmen. When he finished his talk, I angrily grabbed my bag and walked out to the car, where my parents were. I decided not to speak to them about the scrimmage because I would have just become more upset. Additionally, the whole way home was complete

All I wanted to do was enjoy my day on a Freshman retreat to Camp Tekawitha. On a hot day I got back from my retreat around 5:10. Jaclyn and I talked to our coach two days before the retreat and told her that we would be getting back around 5:00 and probably won't be able to make it to practice. We told our coach around 5:00 because our teachers didn't know exactly what time we would be getting back to school. Since practice was over at 5:30, Jaclyn and I thought it wouldn't be necessary to go to practice.…

My mother was the single parent of two growing teenage boys who could eat you out of house and home. We didn’t have the best of everything, but my mother made sure that we had everything that we needed. She ran a tight ship and we were expected to do our share.…

In sixth grade, I wanted nothing more than to make Lusher’s middle school flag football team. I had dreamed of being on the team from the very first day I heard about it; all of my friends were trying out with me; and we had grand plans for a year of non-contact, semi-athletic exertion ahead of us. Having been anxiously awaiting the lunch period when the team roster would be revealed, I was thusly dismayed, disappointed, and disheartened when my name was not one of the eighteen posted on the PE office door. My mother, in all her eternal wisdom, saw a way out of the pit of despair I had sunk into: Lusher was starting an Academic Games team, and she thought I might enjoy playing. I was more than somewhat hesitant; she was more than somewhat…

Setting the mood for remembering our countless failures and long practices, the seniors went around the group, giving each member of the team their own little speech. When they got to me, every single senior noted how much I had changed over the season. Listening to them recount the season to me, it truly hit me how different I was compared to the beginning of the season. Senior speeches had opened a book of memories for me.…

I was not surprised—I knew the basic principles of exercise—but my knowledge had not prevented me from feeling like I was barely improving during those practices. The season finally began that fall, and I was disappointed to hear that I had not been chosen as a starter for the team. All hope was not lost, however, because the coach told the backup players that if we improved, we could be made starters. The season went on and I kept improving and finally, we made it to the state championships. After substituting in the end of the semi-finals, my coach pulled me aside and told me that I would be starting as middle linebacker for the final championship game.…

His motivational speech at Gettysburg also inspires harmony amongst the players. Second, the school and community must accept diversity. The football players stand up for each other both at home and in the community to make a positive example. This is demonstrated in a plethora of ways such as Coach Yoast giving up his hall of fame nomination for a fair game, Gerry choosing his values over his girlfriend, and by the boys breaking up racial tension fights at school.…
