Paper #1
One of my most memorable and lasting memories of my childhood came from the summer of ‘08. It wouldn’t have been a particularly exciting summer to most, but to me, a seven year old who rarely had unique experiences, it was a summer that I would remember for years. This summer entailed my parents dragging along my nine year old sister, myself, my sister’s young chihuahua and my shaggy brussels griffon on a trip to California to pick up a rather gargantuan fifth wheel camper. ‘A nice camper is exciting’ some may say, ‘you can go camping in style’, ‘think of all the memories!’. I get it. Campers are a big part of a lot of childhoods whether it's camping in the mountains or camping at state fair. All of …show more content…
In fact, I only know some things from my childhood because of pictures and stories from my family members. This is the very reason that I am able to recall our stop at Lake Tahoe on this journey to pick up the camper. I was beyond excited to stop at this lake. For no reason in particular besides maybe the fact that I thought it would be like the ocean. Spoiler alert: Lake Tahoe is not like the ocean! It was however, very beautiful in its own way. The lake is incredibly translucent, and the sky so clear it reflected beautifully off the water, and we even saw some wildlife blissfully enjoying their lives. That would have been nice if that’s how the day went. I only got to see that sight of Lake Tahoe off of a postcard that we purchased from a local gift store. The day that we visited the lake, however, it was unfortunately foggy but you could still see the mountains, or hills, as we would call them in Colorado, in the background. I was dressed in the ugliest sweater imaginable and those weird, right below the knee length shorts that you would never see a seven year old today wearing. Oblivious to my hideous style, I thought it was the funnest thing ever to run with my dog, Trey, along the shore of the lake. There was a particularly old, wooden splintering dock that we ran up and down on, over and over again, laughing uncontrollably as we tried to ensure that we didn’t …show more content…
The bear was dressed in blue jeans pants and wore a hat that named the bear ‘Smokey’. Smokey the Bear held a wooden sign that read ‘Only YOU can prevent wildfires!’. Just behind the wooden bear was a forest. Living on the plains of Colorado you don’t see many forests, or trees really, so I thought the forest was such a beautiful sight. The way the trees almost looked like a blanket that was strewn across the hills didn’t even look similar to the forests that you could find here in the Rocky Mountains. They seemed to be a brighter green and being that the trees in California are not the same species as the trees in Colorado they made it that much more new and exciting. They were just as beautiful but in their own way that was completely different than the beauty of the Rocky Mountain
