“Well see my dear… I have observed you having a struggle recently. I want to help you, that is, if you want to be helped? Just tell me to stop and I will…”
I just looked at her and waited for her to continue. She pulled up a website on her computer, a website for FCCLA, Family Career Community Leaders of America. She showed me what FCCLA was and what she wanted me to do. By the end of the conversation I was confused. She ended up sending me home with an application to be a district officer for FCCLA.
Later that night I decided to fill out the application, and start the speech for the election that would take place in two months. Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…
