Personal Narrative Essay: The Power Of One

The Power of One
The power of one is to do something, anything, to change the world or even a small community around you. Even I have done small things to help others out like family, friends, and acquaintances. Things like babysitting for my mom and stepdad while they are at work. Signing up for a Special Olympics event at school. Or when I cooked cookies with my grandma and took them to a nursing home for the residents to enjoy. Any kind deed a person does, even the smallest thing, can change a person’s day, or even their perspective on life.

Over the summer, i babysat my baby sister, Kaci, for my mom and stepdad on days where they had to work or go somewhere for the day. This was a “Power of One” act because it let them go out sometimes and not have to worry about kids or even just going to work so they could earn money for the family. It was easier for me to babysit because they didn’t have to pay me as much as just some stranger babysitting their 12 month old baby. Plus, they didn’t have to worry about her getting treated unfairly because i am family. This is an example

It was really heartwarming to just give people something good. You could tell it made their day better. I feel as if this was a good deed because maybe it inspired them to give back to other people living there as well. It’s so fun to see how happy they looked when we handed them cookies. This was a deed of using The Power of One to change the world a little bit at a time.

Something extremely small can result in a humungous change in one’s life. Anything you can do to positively change our society is an example of “The Power of One”. Like babysitting for family, signing up to volunteer for a tournament for disabled children, or even something as effortless as taking baked goods to a nursing home. If everyone performed a small deed of positivity the world would be that much of a better

When thinking about this, a few examples come to mind. For starters, I am on the soccer team. Soccer games usually get very heated. By remaining calm and showing my teammates and the other team what it means to search for peace in any given situation I can do my part in aiding the transformation of culture on the soccer field. When Mouw talks about sharing in the life of the poor, I can translate this concept to my college life by going out of my way to sit by someone in class or at lunch who rarely has someone to talk to.…

Small Groups, Big Impact Have you ever felt like the odds were against you? Like there were no hopes in fixing a global issue because you were only one person? From the essay “How to Melt the Arctic,” written by John Bocknek, he says, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” The author enforces that no matter the problem, a person or a group of people can change a global issue. In today’s society, people underestimate the impact that they have if they work by themselves or even in an organization.…

Benevolence It is Christmas morning, so you wake up and your is heart pumping with excitement to look under the Christmas tree for your presents. When you arrive your heart fills with much despair because you find nothing there. Unfortunately, this happens to kids all around the world, some of these kids may go to your school. Consequently, every year, as a tradition my grandmother gathers up all of her grandkids and we volunteer at the Salvation Army Intake Center encompassed with her church. At eight a.m. sharp we get out of the car to have the brisk air slap us in the face, we halfway jog and halfway run into the place, we meet hundreds of boxes as soon as we open the door.…

A time in my life that has abundantly affected the way I see myself, community and world is when I volunteered at a soup kitchen or a program known as 'Bread of Life'. As William Shakespeare once said, “How far that little candle throws his beams! So shine a good deed in a naughty world.” I agree with Shakespeare even the littlest of work, makes a big difference. You could volunteer, pick up trash, or vene help out the new kid at school. As I said before even the littlest things can have a big impact.…

There has always been this "guilty mind" behind my ears that if I had a way to help others with my abilities then I would do so. However, the knowledge that I am currently equipped with is very low and limited to what I can do. The choice of secondary education is the next level of commitment to reshape my community. Mark Twain once said “the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why” (Twain, ND). I found out why when I was 19, pregnant and homeless living on the streets of New York City. I knew I had a purposed and that there had to be something more to life than the cards I was given. I believe that every day we have the power to make the world into a better place. Whether it's by saying "please" or "thank you", recycling one can of soda, or just paying someone a compliment, these forms of kindness is what unify our community and inspire us to be good citizens. Growing up my father informed me that "In America, there are no such things as friends and life is always a competition. " This was very puzzling to me as a child because I understood that competition is what drives our society forward, but I never accepted the fact that solidarity was the way to success. Did having all A's and having immense power in class rankings define success?…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
